A colleague of mine recently traveled to a closed country where sharing the Gospel is forbidden. The believers she met there appreciated her presence and asked her to thank the believers in the United States for praying for them. My colleague did not have the heart to tell them that she could not remember the last time she heard prayer for persecuted believers and those who work with them.

Mission work is an act of spiritual warfare. We are entering communities with the intent of bringing people out of the kingdom of darkness and leading them into God’s family. That resulting clash of kingdoms requires our prayer. And that is something that anyone can do.

My wife and I keep an index card on our kitchen table. The card lists all the countries of Europe, from west to east. Whenever we say grace before our meal, we pray for one of the countries on that card. We ask God to open hearts and to send more workers. (Luke 10:2)

If you lead a cell group, helping people to consistently pray for the lost in other nations is quite strategic. Perhaps you could show a video that tells the story of someone you know, use that as a springboard to increase prayer and awareness, and then go to prayer. You could talk live with a missionary via Zoom and pray. You could adopt a missionary and then support them in prayer.

There are many ways to be involved in God’s missionary purpose, and prayer lies at the center of their effectiveness.

When Emperor Constantine ended the major persecution and supported the construction of churches, many things changed. Yes, it helped that the believers were no longer persecuted as they previously were. However, there was a transfer of perceived responsibility.

Over the years, believers became accustomed to sitting in the pews and letting the clergy take responsibility for sharing the gospel. The perceived responsibility between the clergy and laypeople continues in the 21st century. The clergy preaches, and the laypeople listen.

In Revelation 1:6, we see that God made us priests. In Matthew 28:19, Jesus gave the early believers a commandment to go and make disciples. Scripture makes it clear that it is the responsibility of every believer to make disciples, because God has made us priests.

As believers in the 21st century, we must break the cycle ingrained in our church culture. We must start by believing and living as if we are indeed priests, making disciples.

By Nelma Araujo, State Cell Coordinator, Foursquare Gospel Church — Belém, Pará, Brazil

Jesus established his church with a clear structure in mind — a safe environment where his disciples could commune, learn, grow, and share what they had learned with others. In the early church, the home was the center of life. It was where families gathered, businesses operated, and community was built. In that setting, the church thrived. Every believer was productive — growing, maturing, reproducing, and multiplying.

The Christian Priesthood: Returning to Jesus’ Original Model (1 Peter 2:9)

The cell church is a return to the lifestyle of the early church. It is, in many ways, a revolution against the traditional model — one that restores the priesthood of all believers. Ministry moves back into homes. Lay leadership comes alive. The church decentralizes, and every member becomes a leader and a collaborator in God’s kingdom.

Identifying and Raising Up the Unlikely (1 Corinthians 1:27-29)

“God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; he chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” The cell is the ideal environment for identifying gifts and calling — even for awakening ministry dreams in new believers. People who might never have had the opportunity to grow in a traditional church setting will flourish in a cell. The overlooked and the unlikely become strong, effective leaders because they receive personal attention, are intentionally discipled, are trained in practical ways, and are encouraged to step into their God-given role in the kingdom.

Quality Reproduction (2 Timothy 2:1-2)

When a leader is developed in a cell, healthy DNA is passed on. Paul trained Timothy and urged him to do the same — entrusting the vision to faithful men and women who would in turn raise up new leaders, pastors, and missionaries. This is the beauty of cell multiplication: it reproduces what it produces.

Vision and the Reach of the Cell Church (Mark 16:15)

The cell church works anywhere. Its growth is limited only by the vision — or lack of vision — of its leaders. Pastor David Yonggi Cho believed he could reach a million members and impact a nation, and God honored that faith. Jesus himself said that all things are possible to those who believe. The early church faced constant danger and persecution, yet it kept growing, advancing, and transforming the world. That is still our calling today.

Nesse contexto, a igreja prosperou.

A liderança leiga ganha vida.

Evangelism is one of the basic components of cell ministry. Reaching the lost becomes an essential part of the cell’s heart, allowing its members to see missions as something close to them. This connection can be used to encourage prayer for missions.

To do this, the leader should set aside specific moments during the meeting to intercede for missions. He or she can devote a few minutes each week to pray for specific countries, missionaries, persecuted churches, and unreached people groups. Sharing brief, specific information will greatly help reach this goal. When the cell knows names, places, needs, and testimonies, it prays with greater interest and faith.

A leader can present a weekly missions prayer request, read a news item, share a testimony, or show how God is working somewhere. Information awakens compassion, and compassion fuels prayer.

In addition, the leader must model passion for missions. If he or she prays with conviction, the cell will learn to do the same. If the leader shows a burden for the lost, that burden will be passed on to others. Missionary prayer is not taught only through explanations, but through example. A cell that intercedes for the nations broadens its vision, grows in love, and actively participates in God’s global purpose.

A informação desperta a compaixão, e a compaixão alimenta a oração.

The mission of God is not reserved for a select few but entrusted to every believer. Jesus’ command is clear: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). This calling extends beyond pastors, missionaries, or committees—it belongs to the whole church. When every member embraces this calling, missions moves from the margins to the center of the church’s life, transforming spectators into participants in God’s global purpose.

Yet this mission unfolds amid spiritual warfare. Scripture warns us that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against… the spiritual forces of evil” (Ephesians 6:12). Satan actively seeks to blind hearts and hinder the spread of the gospel (2 Corinthians 4:4). That is why prayer is not optional—it is essential.

Intercession is not passive support; it is frontline engagement. When believers pray, they advance the mission in ways unseen yet powerful, partnering with God to open doors, soften hearts, and push back darkness. As Paul urges, “pray at all times in the Spirit… making supplication for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:18), reminding us that prayer is one of the primary ways every believer participates in reaching the world.

For a church family to fully live this out, it must intentionally develop a missions strategy rooted in prayer. Before plans are made or resources are allocated, the church’s leadership seeks God together, asking for His direction and burden for the nations. The early church modeled this: “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul’” (Acts 13:2). Strategy flowed from prayerful dependence. When a church commits to this rhythm, it unites around God’s heart and empowers every member to engage—whether by going, giving, or interceding. In this way, the body grows into maturity, “equipped for the work of ministry” (Ephesians 4:12), and every person becomes an active part of God’s redemptive mission in the world.

Satanás busca ativamente cegar corações e impedir a propagação do evangelho (2 Coríntios 4:4).

Have you ever met someone who felt unseen? Do you run across those who believe they are unloved? Is there anyone in your life who thinks they are undefended? I certainly do – sometimes it is the same person I see in the mirror. When sin entered the world, it did not just diminish our relationship with God; it attempted to steal the identity that He gave us. Evil has crept into humans’ minds and convinced us that we are not worthy of love.

Even the most self-assured individuals can find themselves doubting who they really are. There are moments in life when we feel the world is against us, even our family and friends, so it can seem easy to include God in that category.

This year, I have been spending my personal devotional time in the book of Psalms. I am often blown away by David’s reverence for the Lord. In Psalm 18, he says, “In my distress I called to the Lord for help… my cry came before him, in his ears. The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook… smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from His mouth.” And the psalm goes on to describe how God pursues us in our distress. For weeks after reading this, it burned in my mind. The Lord loves me so passionately that He makes the earth quake and shakes the mountains.

Let’s look back at the first questions and name the people we have encountered who deal with these feelings. What do they need? If the seemingly unlovable, defenseless, and invisible people understood a smidgen of the God that is described in Psalm 18, they might grasp the truth about how much the Father loves them. Their lives would change if they knew someone was always rooting for them and fighting on their behalf. If each man and woman, teen and child, could see that God loved them so much that He sacrificed His Son to die on the cross for their salvation, how drastically would that change things? How much did it change your life?

When we share our faith, pray for someone, or serve those in need, we aren’t just following a mandate; we are letting them know that there is a God who sees, loves, and defends them. Our mission is to let people know, however we can, that nothing can separate God from those He loves.

by Steve Cordle, Executive Director, The River Network International (trni.org)

In many ways, the Bible is a love story. It recounts God’s eternal quest to restore his relationship with a lost humanity.

The book of Genesis tells us that God created people to enjoy an unhindered communion with him. Then, people were deceived into distrusting God’s good intent for them. They walked away from life with God into an alienated existence that resulted in death for themselves and the planet.

God had every reason to let humanity go and suffer the eternal fate they chose. He had been rejected, distrusted, disobeyed, and not given the glory due him.

But he didn’t let lost humanity go. His love would not let him.

Out of his love, he pursued us.

He spoke to a man named Abram and made a covenant to be in a relationship with him and his descendants. God revealed that his plan was to bless the entire world through Abraham. Why? God’s love pursues lost people.

The story of Israel is one of an unfaithful people wandering from God. Yet, God repeatedly sent prophets to call them back. Why? God’s love pursues lost people.

Finally, God came to earth himself in the form of Jesus, who said, “The Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” (Luke 19:10) Why? “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God’s love pursues us.

Revelation 21:3 reveals God’s end goal for us, his creation: And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.”

Through the Great Commission, Jesus calls us, his Body, to participate in his mission of seeking and saving the lost. Our motivation for missions comes from God’s character. “For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.” (2 Corinthians 5:14)

Psalm 136 repeats this amazing truth 26 times: His love endures forever.

A história de Amor de Deus

Steve Cordle, Diretor Executivo, The River Network International (trni.org)

“Então, ouvi grande voz vinda do trono, dizendo:

God desires to communicate his good news to all people, because he wants to reconcile them to himself. This interest of God does not arise from a need for control, but from his character. He creates out of love, sustains out of love, and seeks out of love. The gospel is the way in which that love is made public: God does not abandon the sinner to his wandering, but instead announces forgiveness, new life, and hope in Christ.

God is also concerned with his glory. This does not mean that he is vain. It means that he desires the truth about who he is to be known: holy, just, merciful, and Savior. In the gospel, his justice and his grace shine together. That is why he wants it to be proclaimed: so that people may know him as he truly is.

Human beings do not merely need moral improvement; they need salvation. The gospel is the only way to restore a relationship with him. God desires to form a people. He does not save only isolated individuals; he gathers a family, a body, a community that lives under the lordship of Christ and anticipates his kingdom.

God is so interested in people hearing the gospel because he loves them, wants to rescue them, make his truth known to them, and make them participants in his kingdom. The gospel matters so much because in it God himself comes to meet the human being.

From the very beginning, Scripture reveals a God who moves toward people. In Genesis, even after the fall, God seeks out Adam and Eve, calling, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9). This is not a distant or indifferent God, but One whose very nature is to pursue, to restore, and to redeem. His missionary heart is woven into His character—He is the God who blesses in order to send. When He calls Abraham, He declares, “All peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:3). Mission is not an afterthought; it is central to who God is. To understand mission rightly, we must first see that it begins in the heart of God Himself.

As the story of Scripture unfolds, we see this purpose expand and intensify. God continually reaches beyond boundaries—toward nations, outsiders, and the lost. Through the prophets, He declares His intention: “I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). This culminates in the sending of Jesus, the ultimate expression of God’s missionary love: “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). Jesus is not merely a messenger; He is the message—God in flesh, stepping into our world. The Father sends the Son, and the Son sends His followers, making it clear that mission flows directly from the nature and action of God.

When we grasp this, everything changes. The church does not create mission; we join it. As Jesus says, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you” (John 20:21). We are invited into a story that began long before us and will continue until every nation, tribe, and tongue stands before the throne (Revelation 7:9). There is both weight and wonder in this calling—the weight of participating in God’s redemptive work, and the wonder that He would invite us into it at all. Our churches don’t engage in mission because it’s strategic or beneficial, but because it reflects the very heartbeat of God. To be His people is to be sent.

By Joel Comiskey, God’s Missionary Purpose (new 2026 book)

Mission isn’t a program the church runs. It’s a reflection of who God is.

The more I study Scripture — and the more I write my new book about missions — the clearer it becomes: mission didn’t begin with us. It didn’t begin with a committee, a strategy, or even the Great Commission. Mission begins with God.

From the opening pages of Scripture, we see a God who moves toward people. After the Fall, He seeks Adam and Eve. After the flood, He preserves a remnant. And in Genesis 12, He calls Abraham — not as an end in himself, but as a means to reach the nations: “All peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

God’s plan was always global. His heart has always been for all peoples.

This is where we must start. Because if we don’t get this right, everything else becomes activity without an anchor.

Mission is not primarily about what we do. It’s about who God is. God is a sending God.

He sends Abraham.

He sends Moses.

He sends the prophets.

And ultimately, He sends His Son.

“As the Father has sent me, I am sending you” (John 20:21, NIV). The church exists because God sends. And we are called to join Him.

The Missionary Thread of Scripture

From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is a missionary story. The Psalms call us to “declare His glory among the nations” (Psalm 96:3).

The prophets envision a day when people from every nation stream to the mountain of the Lord. Revelation ends with a great multitude from every tribe, tongue, and people worshiping before the throne. God has been working toward that scene the whole time.

Mission is not an occasional emphasis. It is the outflow of God’s glory. As John Piper famously said, “Missions exist because worship doesn’t” (John Piper, Let the Nations Be Glad!). One day, missions will end. Worship will not.

Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria — and the World

When Jesus gives His final instructions in Acts 1:8, He doesn’t simply say “go everywhere.” He maps out the world in layers — each one representing increasing cultural distance.

Jerusalem — home turf.

Judea — familiar, but further.

Samaria — culturally tense, historically hostile.

The ends of the earth — completely different languages, customs, and worldviews.

Jesus doesn’t let His disciples off the hook at any level. Near and far. Familiar and foreign. All of it.

To help us think clearly about those layers, missiologist Ralph Winter developed the E‑Scale — a simple way to understand the cultural distance we cross when sharing the gospel.

The E‑Scale at a Glance

E‑0 — Renewal of nominal or inactive believers

E‑1 — Reaching people in your own culture and language

E‑2 — Crossing moderate cultural barriers

E‑3 — Frontier missions among unreached peoples

Over the coming weeks, we’ll walk through this scale together. We’ll talk about local mission in your own Jerusalem and Judea, about crossing cultural lines with humility, and about the roughly 40% of the world that still has little to no access to the gospel.

But none of it makes sense apart from this: God is already at work. And we are joining Him. Let’s pray this prayer: “Lord, help me see where You are at work — and give me the courage to join You.”

Click here if you’d like to receive each blog in your email inbox. For April, we’ll cover:

Week 1 (April 5–11) God’s Missionary Purpose

We’ll open the month by grounding everything in the character of God. Mission isn’t a program the church runs — it’s a reflection of who God is. From Genesis to Revelation, He is a God who reaches toward people, who pursues the lost, and who sends. Our churches don’t do missions because it’s a good idea; we do it because we’re joining something God has been doing from the beginning.

Week 2 (April 12–18) Every Person Mobilized

This post is about ownership. Too often, missions feels like something a small committee handles while the rest of the church watches. But Scripture calls every believer into this story. I also want this post to take spiritual warfare seriously — Satan actively works to deceive and destroy, and the mission advances through prayer.

Week 3 (April 19–25) Local Missions — Jerusalem and Judea

Here we get practical and close to home. Drawing on the E-1 and E-2 categories from the excerpt, let’s challenge our readers to look at the people already around them — neighbors, coworkers, the communities just beyond our church walls. Local mission isn’t a consolation prize for people who can’t go overseas. It’s where most of us are called to start, and for many, it’s where we’re called to stay.

Week 4 (April 26–May 2 ) Regions Beyond — The Unreached

We’ll close the month by lifting readers’ eyes to the horizon. Roughly 40% of the world’s population has little to no access to the gospel — no church in their community, no Bible in their language, no one in their network who follows Jesus. That’s not a statistic to gloss over. You can be part of reaching the unreached through prayer, through giving, and by supporting those who go.

Portuguese blog:

Diz respeito a quem Deus é. Deus é um Deus que envia.

Ele envia Abraão.

Ele envia Moisés.

Ele envia os profetas.

E, finalmente, Ele envia Seu Filho.

“Assim como o Pai me enviou, eu envio vocês” (João 20:21).

[Deixe as Nações Se Alegrarem!]).

Samaria — culturalmente tensa, historicamente hostil.

E-2 — Transpor barreiras culturais moderadas

Él envía a Abraham.

Él envía a Moisés.

Y estamos llamados a unirnos a Él.

E-2 — Superar barreras culturales moderadas
