Most churches have small groups, but that doesn’t make them cell churches. In a cell church, holistic groups, not the corporate worship service, are the basic expression of the Church.

To assert that cell groups are the basic expression of the Church is not the opinion of someone who likes small groups; it is an observable reality.

For hundreds of years, the early church could not meet for large-group worship because they were persecuted. Yet they changed the world.

The fastest-growing churches in the world are in Iran and China. They do not meet at large-group worship services. It is illegal. They only meet in small groups. But they are winning large numbers of people to Christ and helping them grow into his likeness.

The holistic small group is the basic expression of the Church because it can fulfill all its purposes. When a group is intentionally structured, you can worship in a small group, have fellowship, and fulfill the New Testament “one anothers” there. You can grow as a disciple in a group. You can serve in ministry as part of a group, and you can reach out in evangelism as a small group.

We cannot fulfill all the purposes of the church sitting shoulder to shoulder in a weekly worship service. Corporate worship can strengthen us in unique ways, but millions of believers around the world will tell us it is a blessed privilege, not an essential.

Church leaders who assume that the corporate worship service is the essential expression of the Church will pour the majority of resources, time, and personnel into making the worship the best it can be. The problem is that we cannot disciple people in a corporate worship service. We can praise God, teach, and inspire, but not disciple. Discipleship requires a personal relationship, and that happens in a group.

Cell-based churches focus on strengthening the cell system. They hire staff, focus time and resources on making disciples through holistic groups.

by Timo Barbosa, pastor at Miller Memorial Church – Johnstown, OH

What makes a cell church different from every other small group model? The answer is surprisingly simple: in a cell church, the cell is not merely a meeting people attend. It is the primary environment where disciples are formed, leaders are developed, pastoral care happens, evangelism becomes relational, and multiplication is expected.

Many churches have small groups. Cell churches are built around them.

This distinction echoes the ministry of John Wesley. Wesley did not create groups as an optional program alongside church life. His class meetings and band meetings became the engine of spiritual growth within the Methodist movement. Members were expected to participate, not simply to gain knowledge, but to pursue transformation. One of the central questions asked in Wesley’s groups was, “How does your soul prosper?” The focus was on obedience, accountability, and growth in Christ, not merely the discussion of biblical ideas.

Modern cell church thinkers have emphasized this same principle. Ralph Neighbor described the cell as the basic building block of church life, not a ministry department. Joel Comiskey has consistently highlighted that healthy cells are designed to make disciples who make disciples. Likewise, Michael Goheen reminds us that the church is called to be a missionary community, embodying the gospel together in everyday life.

When a cell functions as God intended, people are known, cared for, challenged, and equipped. New believers grow. Future leaders emerge. Relationships deepen. Mission becomes personal. The result is not simply a healthier meeting but a healthier church.

So here is the question: if your cell group disappeared tomorrow, would your church’s mission continue unchanged, or would something essential be missing?

The answer may reveal whether your group is merely gathering people—or truly making disciples. Invest in the cell. Live the mission. Help others follow Jesus. The future of the church is shaped one disciple, one relationship, and one cell at a time.

Viva a missão. Ajude outros a seguirem Jesus.

Churches often hold a variety of valuable meetings. These usually include biblical teaching, prayer, and fellowship. All of this is important and necessary for the edification of believers. However, a cell is not defined merely by gathering a few people in a home or elsewhere. Its purpose is more intentional: to form disciples who make other disciples.

With this intention, a cell maintains a strong evangelistic focus. It does not exist only for those who already belong to the church, but also for those who do not yet know the Lord. Each member is encouraged to invite, witness, and serve others. In addition, the cell seeks to care for and develop those who believe. It is a place where new believers receive a foundation, grow in Christian maturity, and are mentored by other believers.

An important aspect of this development is that the cell provides the right environment for every new believer to discover and develop their gifts. Not everything depends on the leader. Some can teach, others encourage, others serve, others intercede, others visit, and others welcome guests. The cell provides a practical space where gifts do not remain hidden, but are placed at the service of the body of Christ.

A meeting may be limited to receiving teaching; a cell seeks for every person to grow until they are able to share what they have received. Therefore, in the cell, the Word is not only studied but applied to daily life. Prayer not only expresses internal needs but also intercedes for the lost. Fellowship not only strengthens friendships among believers but also creates an atmosphere of love in which new people can be welcomed, accompanied, and guided toward Christ. That is the key difference between a cell and other small meetings.

One reason I am committed to small group ministry is that it empowers all members to use their God-given gifts to serve and build up the body of Christ. After serving in a church with small groups for nearly three decades, I’ve seen hundreds of ordinary people (like Jesus’s twelve disciples) accomplish amazing things for the cause of Christ.

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-12).

The church is built up when God’s people are equipped and empowered. The church cannot be built up if the pastors and paid staff are the only individuals doing the work of the ministry.

If you’re a pastor (or a small group leader) seeking to equip others for ministry, look for people who are FAST (faithful, available, submissive, and teachable). Remember, God didn’t call you to do everything yourself. Scripture calls you to equip. Reflect on your control issues (we all have them!) and address them. Unleash the church, pastor!

If you consider yourself an ordinary person who desires to build up the body of Christ, then be FAST. Let me emphasize “submissive.” Be submissive to God and your spiritual leaders. Your pastor(s) won’t get everything “right”—they’re human. Support, encourage, and love your pastor(s). I know they will appreciate it. If you can’t submit to your church’s spiritual leaders, God may call you to a different church. Pray!

And let’s all remember the “why” behind equipping others— “so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” The “why” is that we may continually conform to the image of Christ.

Liberte a igreja, pastor!

Permita-me enfatizar o termo “submisso”.

Sé sumiso a Dios y a tus líderes espirituales. Apoya, anima y ama a tus pastores. Sé que lo apreciarán. Si no puedes someterte a los líderes espirituales de tu iglesia, Dios podría llamarte a otra iglesia. ¡Ora!

By Joel Comiskey, Empowered to Lead

We’ve spent recent months exploring pastoral leadership in depth. But what about the person leading the cell group every week?

In the cell church movement, we hold a conviction that sets us apart from traditional small-group ministry: the cell is the church — not a program of the church, not an optional add-on, not a midweek supplement to the “real thing” on Sunday morning. The cell is the very base of the church in action. Where two or three gather in His name, He is there. That’s not a small group meeting — that’s the church.

This conviction changes everything downstream.

When the cell is the church, the person facilitating that group isn’t just leading a Bible study or keeping the discussion on track. They are pastoring people. They’re caring for souls, noticing who’s struggling, celebrating who’s growing, and building up the body of Christ — making disciples who make disciples. Week after week, in living rooms, parks, and restaurants around the world, these faithful men and women are doing the work of ministry.

I love the word “facilitator” to describe this leader because the root meaning of “facilitate” is to empower — to make things possible for others. That’s the heartbeat of cell leadership. But a great cell facilitator doesn’t stop at empowering discussion. They go further. They pastor each member: following up, praying specifically, knowing names, needs, and stories.

Facilitator and pastor. Empowerer and shepherd. The best cell leaders hold both.

Throughout June, experienced pastors and cell church leaders from around the world will blog on the theme of the cell and the cell facilitator. Click here if you’d like to receive these posts directly in your email inbox.
Week 1 (June 7–13) — The Cell as Church: What Makes It Different?
What does it actually mean to say the cell is the church? How do we hold and communicate that conviction in a way that shapes how every member participates — not just the leader? Our writers will tackle the key distinction in quality that separates cell church from small group ministry.

Week 2 (June 14–20) — The Facilitator as Pastor-Shepherd
How do we prepare facilitators to see themselves not merely as discussion leaders but as true pastor-shepherds? And how do we cultivate teams of leaders rather than lone rangers who eventually burn out or bottle up the ministry God has given them?

Week 3 (June 21–27) — Holding the Tension: Facilitator and Pastor
These two roles overlap — but they’re not identical, and the difference matters. How do we help facilitators navigate the real tension between drawing people out in discussion and stepping in as a caring shepherd? Our contributors will help readers find that balance without losing either dimension.

Week 4 (June 28–July 4) — Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders
The mark of a great cell facilitator isn’t just a healthy group — it’s members who are stepping out, taking risks, and owning their next step in ministry. How do facilitator-pastors actually make that happen? We’ll close the month with practical wisdom on releasing people into their calling.

Facilitador y pastor, empoderador y guía espiritual.

by Robert Lay, www.celulas.com.br

One foundational principle must be stated at the outset: the lead pastor of a cell church should never delegate his position to another staff member. He remains the head of the system. That said, the most effective and sustainable way to steward the cell vision is through a team — and this is thoroughly biblical.

From the very beginning, God declared that it is not good for man to be alone. He gave Adam a helper and commanded them to multiply together. When God called Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt, He gave him Aaron at his side. Later, in the wilderness, Jethro warned Moses that leading alone would eventually break him — and he proposed a layered structure of leaders over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. Israel’s kings ruled with a council of elders. Jesus Himself kept an inner circle of Peter, James, and John, and sent His disciples out two by two.

The apostolic pattern is equally clear. Paul never ministered in isolation — he worked alongside Barnabas, then Silas, and invested deeply in a circle of partners: Timothy, Titus, Epaphras, Epaphroditus, Aquila and Priscilla. Throughout the New Testament, local churches were led not by a single elder but by elders, plural.

This pattern matters practically as well as theologically. Pastors who lead alone will burn out — it is only a matter of time. The pastoral leadership team at the top sets the tone for the entire coaching and cell structure beneath it. According to Dr. Comiskey, the marks of a healthy pastoral team are vision, prayer, passion, involvement, and shared ownership. In a team, burdens are distributed, accountability is built in, and mutual prayer becomes a way of life.

Dr. Bill Beckham captured it well: “men are not made to be alone and famous. We are plowing horses, not parade horses.”

Many leaders in the modern era have failed precisely because they isolated themselves at the top. May God give us the humility and wisdom to lead together — for His glory and the building of His Kingdom.

Korean blog (click here)

Team Leadership in the Cell Church

Robert Lay, www.celulas.com.br

Healthy church leadership is not built by gathering the most talented people, but by forming the right team through shared vision, spiritual empowerment, and lived example. Throughout Scripture, we see that God’s design for leadership is not isolated, but deeply relational and intentionally multiplied.

Consider Moses. In Numbers 11, God instructed him to gather seventy elders, and then did something remarkable: He placed the same Spirit that was on Moses upon them. This was not mere delegation; it was empowerment. Moses moved from carrying the burden alone to leading a Spirit-filled team that shared responsibility. Earlier, with Jethro’s counsel, he had already learned the importance of structuring leadership wisely. Together, these moments reveal a powerful truth: healthy teams are both spiritually empowered and intentionally developed.

Now look at David and his mighty men. They did not begin as elite warriors. They were shaped over time through proximity to a leader who had faced giants and trusted God in battle. Men like Eleazar became fearless not by theory, but by walking closely with someone who modeled courage. Leadership, in this sense, is caught before it is taught. When people live and serve alongside a leader of faith, boldness becomes contagious.

This is the foundation for building strong church teams today. It’s not about titles or positions, but about alignment. A healthy team shares vision, prays together, carries passion for the mission, and takes mutual ownership. It becomes “our mission,” not just the pastor’s responsibility.

Here is the challenge: who are you raising, not just leading? Invite others close. Share your life. Empower them with responsibility and trust. Great teams are not found; they are formed.

Veamos a Moisés .

Any healthy, thriving church requires a healthy, effective pastoral team. The pastoral staff of a cell-based church has different responsibilities from those of a program-based church. For example, instead of managing programs, they lead networks of disciple-makers. Instead of caring for the congregation’s needs, they equip the members to evangelize and make disciples. Their time is spent developing disciple-making leaders rather than running church programs.

This means cell churches will rarely find their Pastoral team members by hiring them from other churches; they need to grow most of their own staff members. The good news is that they are perfectly structured to do that.

Joel Comiskey has said that cell groups are “leader breeders.” That is, holistic small groups are an ideal environment for developing leaders. In groups, people can progress through the stages of leadership development without pressure and little risk.

In short, develop apprentices at every level of the church. Group leaders develop apprentice group leaders. Coaches/Supervisors apprentice group leaders who can become Coaches. Network Pastors can apprentice Coaches to become future Network Pastors. Even Senior Pastors can apprentice a Network Pastor to become their eventual successor.

Developing an Apprentice takes time and patience. Starting the process today will assure your church of effective leadership tomorrow.

Which level is your ministry strongest at apprenticing? Weakest?

The work of building a pastoral team begins long before a position is filled or a leader is recruited. It begins on the lead pastor’s knees. Jesus modeled this when, before naming the twelve apostles, “he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God” (Luke 6:12). The right people rarely arrive by accident; they are discovered through prayerful discernment and intentional relationships. Some will come as full-time staff, called to vocational ministry, while others will be volunteer leaders raised up organically from within the small groups, where their character and gifting have already been tested in the soil of everyday community. A wise lead pastor watches for those who are faithful in little, who serve without title, and who carry a contagious love for both God and people. These are the ones to gather close, because a team is only as strong as the spiritual maturity of those who form it.

A healthy pastoral team is marked by shared vision, fervent prayer, and unmistakable passion. “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). Without a shared vision, the team fractures. The lead pastor must articulate the vision clearly and repeatedly, but the team must also own it, carrying it into every ministry decision and small-group conversation. Prayer cannot be reduced to opening and closing a meeting; it must be the engine of the team’s life together, just as the early church “continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42). Passion follows naturally when vision and prayer converge. A team that has truly seen God’s heart for their city and their people will not need to be motivated; they will need to be channeled. This kind of passion is not manufactured through conferences or pep talks. It is the overflow of leaders who have spent time with Jesus and cannot help but burn with what they have seen.

Finally, a healthy team tears down territorial silos and replaces them with excellent communication, a healthy culture, and shared ownership. Too often, ministries operate as competing fiefdoms, with leaders guarding their budgets, volunteers, and turf. But Paul wrote, “Now you are the body of Christ, and members in particular” (1 Corinthians 12:27), reminding us that no ministry exists for itself. This requires honest, frequent communication that addresses tension before it festers and celebrates wins across every ministry line. It requires a culture where leaders feel safe to disagree, free to dream, and trusted to lead. And it requires shared ownership, where wins belong to everyone and so do the losses. When a pastoral team operates this way, they fulfill Jesus’ prayer that His followers “may be one” (John 17:21), and the watching world sees not a polished organization but a family on mission together.

Much has been said about the importance of cell church pastors leading their work teams, but pastors also need to be part of a larger team. A pastor of a cell church should not walk alone. One valuable resource for receiving strength, wisdom, and encouragement is fellowship with the worldwide community of cell church pastors.

When a pastor relates to other cell church pastors, his perspective broadens. He discovers that many of his challenges are not unique to his own church. Leader formation, cell multiplication, the consolidation of new believers, and supervision are common issues in many parts of the world. This awareness helps him better interpret his own reality and not become discouraged in the face of difficulties.

Furthermore, fellowship helps us to learn from others’ experiences. Some churches have walked the cell church path for years and have developed useful principles that can be wisely adapted to other contexts. The goal is not to copy models mechanically, but to discern the principles that can strengthen one’s own church.

Relationships with other pastors also protect against ministerial isolation. A pastor who walks alone runs a greater risk of growing weary, becoming enclosed in his own ideas, or losing the freshness of the vision. Fellowship offers counsel, friendship, correction, inspiration, and accompaniment.

The importance of this connection is that it serves as a reminder that the local church is part of God’s broader work among the nations. The worldwide community of cell church pastors keeps alive the vision of making disciples, caring for people, and extending the kingdom of God through healthy, organized churches committed to the mission.
