By Scott Boren, The Center for Community and Mission — scottboren.blogspot.com| @mscottboren

In my previous post, I proposed that God — as Father, Son, and Spirit — leads in community; therefore, we are called to lead our groups in the same way. This means embracing team leadership over individualistic leadership. Here are five reasons why it matters.

1. Team leadership frees you from having to do everything well.

No small group leader is gifted in every area the role demands. When you lead as part of a team, you can partner with people whose strengths complement your own. If you are naturally hospitable and pastoral, lean into those gifts — and let someone else facilitate discussion or guide the group in prayer. You lead through your strengths, not in spite of your weaknesses.

2. Team leadership keeps you humble.

On a team, no one person makes it work. Successes are shared — and so are failures. More than that, team leadership requires you to think things through with others before acting, to submit your perspective to the group, and to genuinely listen. That posture, practiced consistently, forms humility in ways that solo leadership rarely does.

3. Team leadership protects you from burnout.

When I led a group alone, I felt guilty taking a vacation. I rarely asked what I needed to stay healthy because I felt solely responsible for the group’s welfare. A team changes that dynamic. You don’t have to be constantly “on” or strong for everyone else. You are free to lead in weakness because others are carrying the load alongside you.

4. Team leadership is how discipleship actually happens.

It shifts the focus from passing on information to sharing in a participatory way. When emerging leaders are part of a team, they learn by doing — through trial, error, and real-time feedback — rather than through a training program alone. Discipleship becomes embedded in the life of the group itself.

5. Team leadership creates space for mission.

Solo-leader groups often spend most of their energy just keeping the group together — getting people to show up, maintaining connection, managing the basics. A team frees the group from that constant pressure. With shared ownership of the vision, there is more capacity — and more creativity — to engage people outside the group and join what God is doing in the wider community.

By Scott Boren, The Center for Community and Mission — scottboren.blogspot.com| @mscottboren

Over the years, I’ve encountered many group leaders driven by an individualistic imagination — and honestly, most leaders tend to operate this way. Within this mindset, the group’s success or failure falls squarely on the leader’s shoulders. On some levels, it works. Sometimes it really is just easier to do it yourself. We celebrate these leaders — the ones who’ve started the most groups, led the longest, stayed the course. We give them prizes, parade them on stage, and honor their dedication.

I’m not dismissing that kind of recognition. But I do want to challenge the idea of the superhero leader — because when we examine the triune nature of God, many of our common leadership assumptions begin to unravel, even when they produce results.

The Logic of Trinitarian Leadership

Here is the basic framework:

We are called to imitate God (Ephesians 5:1).

God is triune — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — living in eternal unity as three persons in one being. God is not a solitary individual but a community of love, each person distinct yet inseparably one.

God leads us out of this character of love. He does not coerce or manipulate for the sake of outcomes. Jesus illustrates this perfectly: he led relationally, out of the communion he shared with the Father by the Spirit. He led by sharing life with his disciples rather than exerting power to produce results.

Therefore, since we are called to imitate God’s way of leading, collaborative leadership is not merely a good strategy — it is God’s way.

When Results Aren’t the Point

This trinitarian way of leading does not always produce the outcomes we expect — and that troubled the disciples deeply. If Jesus was the Messiah, they reasoned, he should be delivering Messiah-sized results: driving out the Romans as David had driven out Israel’s enemies, restoring the temple as Moses had restored God’s presence. Jesus did none of it the way anyone anticipated.

That is the point.

Leading in a way that reflects the triunity of God is not primarily about producing numbers, though numbers may come. It is about subverting the principalities and powers that govern the normal patterns of our world — patterns built on control, force, and manipulation. These methods work, in their way. People can be compelled to line up. Many Christian leaders have accomplished genuinely good things through what might be called a “power-over” approach. But when we import worldly power structures into the church, we allow forces into our common life that can look, on the surface, deceptively — and dangerously — godly.

The Pattern of Foot-Washing Leadership

God has not called small group leaders to produce results as individuals. He has called us to lead according to the pattern revealed in Christ — to walk with people, in humility, washing feet. And not only to wash feet, but to train up a team that washes feet, so that they, in turn, can train others to do the same.

Leaders who wash feet are not protecting their position — they are inviting others into leadership. They are creating the conditions for a team to lead together under the guidance of the Spirit, as Jesus himself led.

That is the pattern. That is the call.

No entanto, quero desafiar a noção do líder super-herói.

Estamos llamados a imitar a Dios (Efesios 5: 1).

By Rodrigo Leone, pastor of the adult network and leadership training director at Central Baptist Church, Itabira, MG — cell member, pastoral team leader, and multiplying cell leader.

Cells are not a modern innovation. They are rooted in the New Testament itself. The early church gathered in homes — small, simple communities where believers practiced the “one-anothers” of Scripture, encouraged one another, bore one another’s burdens, and grew together in faith. And before any of that, Jesus himself led the first small group. The disciples were his cell.

Life on Life — Then and Now

Those first disciples did more than observe the Master from a distance. They lived with him, learned from him, and then went out and replicated what they had received. They made disciples who made disciples. The movement spread not through programs but through relationships — life poured into life.

That kind of ministry is increasingly rare today. Many of us have been formed by a programmatic model of church, and unlearning it takes time and intentionality. This is where the small group pastor plays a crucial role — not just in organizing groups, but in helping people experience a different way of being the church.

The Small Group Pastor as Guide and Model

To lead others into cell life, the small group pastor must have lived it personally. You cannot lead someone somewhere you have never been. This pastor must have sat in a circle, shared life with a small group of believers, multiplied a cell, and felt both the difficulty and the joy of disciple-making up close.

More than skill or structure, what drives this ministry is love — Christ’s love, channeled through ordinary people committed to one another. The walk is often slow and sometimes discouraging. But the results, in God’s hands, are certain. Lives are changed. Leaders are formed. And many who begin as quiet cell members eventually step into pastoral roles themselves — as happened in Rodrigo’s own journey.

The Heart of It All

Cell ministry is disciple-making ministry. That is its heartbeat, its reason for existing. It is not a program to be managed but a New Testament lifestyle to be embraced — one relationship, one cell, one generation of disciples at a time.

By Rodrigo Leone, pastor of the adult network and leadership training director at Central Baptist Church, Itabira, MG — cell member, pastoral team leader, and multiplying cell leader.

One of the most defining marks of God’s children is growth. Not growth for its own sake, but the kind of fruitfulness that comes from walking closely with God — what Paul describes in Ephesians 5:16 as “making the most of every opportunity.” Ministerial growth is not a luxury; it is evidence of a life surrendered to God’s purposes.

Jesus modeled this clearly. He made disciples through a relationship — through a small, committed group of people. That basic unit, the cell, remains the first and most essential form of pastoral ministry. Before a leader can multiply, plant, or lead networks, they must learn to lead a cell well.

Walk with God First

Successful cell leadership begins not with strategy, but with intimacy. A cell leader must first learn to walk with God and hear his voice. This sounds obvious, yet many 21st-century churches have drifted toward producing polished services rather than cultivating genuine encounters with Jesus. Cell members and leaders alike need to come to God as children — expectant, dependent, and open to the Holy Spirit’s movement. Everything else flows from this.

Start Small and Stay Faithful

The temptation in ministry is to wait for something significant before getting started — a platform, a larger audience, a better opportunity. But God builds leaders from the bottom up. “Small” tasks are not beneath you; they are your training ground. They are the offerings you bring to God, and it is through them that he develops your character and expands your capacity.

Faithfulness in small things is not a stepping stone to real ministry — it is real ministry. Jesus said as much: “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (Luke 16:10).

Seize the Opportunities in Front of You

Don’t wait for the ideal moment. Do your best with what God has placed in front of you today. Serve where you are. Lead the group you have. Be faithful to the nudge of the Spirit, even when it feels insignificant.

God is faithful to those who are faithful to him. As you take the next step — however small — trust that he is walking with you toward a rich harvest.

The main changes I made: tightened the prose, added Luke 16:10 to reinforce the “start small” point biblically, gave the subheadings more punch, and smoothed out some grammatical roughness. The pastoral voice and core message are fully preserved — this reads very much like a JCG blog post now. Let me know if you’d like any tone or content adjustments!

“If you can successfully transition your pastoral team to cell church ministry, the rest is easy,” I often tell pastors. And if the church has already made the transition, my counsel is the same: make your pastoral team your top priority, and a healthy cell system will follow.

Why? Because vision flows from leaders. Christ has placed pastor-teachers in his body precisely to build up the church (Ephesians 4:11-12). Pastors are the primary visionaries in cell ministry — but the lone-ranger pastor model so common in the West is simply not biblical. In the New Testament, leadership is always plural.

The early churches were led by teams, not individuals. Elders and overseers functioned together, and deacons — mentioned in at least two churches (Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:8, 12) — were likewise always named in the plural. Shared leadership wasn’t an organizational preference; it was the norm.

This makes perfect sense in cell ministry. The cell church exists to provide care for the entire congregation through multiple leaders — much like Jesus, who poured himself into a core team of Peter, James, and John. The pastor equips the team; the team cares for the cell leaders; the cell leaders shepherd the members. That’s the chain of care.

So who belongs on the pastoral team? Those who are walking in integrity, fully committed to Jesus, and 100% behind the cell church ministry. In the early stages, that means people who are actively leading cells. As the church grows, the bar rises: those on the pastoral team should be leaders who have multiplied their cells. Since New Testament elders led house churches, expecting pastoral team members to lead and multiply cell groups isn’t a modern requirement — it’s deeply biblical.

Team ministry means praying together, feeding on the Word together, and then turning attention to the needs of cell leaders. Are the groups meeting consistently? Are leaders aligned? Where are the victories? Where are the warning signs? I’m increasingly convinced that up-to-date statistics are essential here — not as a bureaucratic exercise, but as a pastoral one. The team that tracks what’s happening can respond wisely to what it sees.

Shared leadership has a price. Conflict will come. Coordination takes effort. But the fruit of team leadership far outweighs the difficulties — and the alternative — a solo pastor trying to carry a congregation alone — is neither healthy nor sustainable. Solomon said it well: “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12).

Team leadership isn’t a trend. It’s the biblical pattern — and for cell ministry, it’s the foundation everything else is built on.

Por Joel Comiskey, Living in Victory

A liderança no Novo Testamento é sempre plural!

Então, quem deve fazer parte dessa equipe pastoral?

When we look at Scripture, a clear pattern emerges: leadership was never meant to be carried alone. From the Old Testament to the New, God consistently works through teams, not isolated individuals. Even the kings of Israel were surrounded by counselors. King David led alongside mighty men and trusted advisors. King Solomon, known for his wisdom, governed with a structured team. In contrast, King Rehoboam rejected wise counsel and led the nation into division. The message is clear: leadership without shared wisdom weakens the mission.

This same principle continues in the New Testament. Jesus didn’t build His ministry around a solo model. He invested deeply in a core group of disciples, including His inner circle, while building a broader team to carry out the mission. The apostle Paul followed this pattern, traveling with apostolic teams and raising up leaders wherever he went. The early church consistently appointed plural elders, showing that shared leadership was the norm, not the exception.

Biblical leadership is not about control, but about guidance and empowerment. The primary leader is not called to dominate, but to serve, equip, and walk with others. Jesus redefined greatness by teaching that those who lead must become servants. This shifts leadership from authority alone to responsibility shared in community. Vision is set together, discernment is practiced together, and mission is carried out together.

Team leadership is not a modern strategy; it is a biblical foundation for healthy, multiplying ministry. When leaders walk together, the church grows stronger, wiser, and more aligned with God’s purpose.

So here is the challenge: who is walking with you? Build your team. Invite others in. Share the weight. God’s mission was never meant to be carried alone.

No one possesses all the gifts, all the wisdom, or all the capacity needed to fully care for the church. God has distributed diverse gifts among His people so that the body may depend on cooperation rather than on the prominence of a single person. God’s inclination to use teams of people to care for His church is a theological expression of His purpose and of the way He wants His people to live, grow, and be built up.

The nature of the church is that of a flock, a people, a building, and a body; it is never represented by an individual figure. Paul teaches that “the body is not made up of one member, but of many,” and that each member has a necessary function. This protects the church because when all responsibility rests on one person, the risks of exhaustion, authoritarianism, improvisation, or pastoral neglect increase. By contrast, a team makes it possible to discern more wisely, to correct one another, to meet more needs, and to accompany God’s people with greater balance.

Jesus Himself worked by forming a team. Although He could have done everything by Himself, He called twelve disciples, trained them, sent them out, and delegated responsibilities to them. His method was not only to preach to the crowds, but also to form people who could later serve others.

Evangelism, discipleship, teaching, pastoral care, prayer, visitation, and administration require many hands. That is why in Acts 6 a group of servants was chosen to address a specific need, while the apostles devoted themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word. There we see a clear principle: when the work grows, the team of servants must also grow. A church cared for by healthy teams does not depend on a single person, but learns to function as a spiritual family, where each member serves according to the grace they have received.

Deus trabalha por meio das equipes

Mario Vega, www.elim.org.sv

O evangelismo, o discipulado, o ensino, o cuidado pastoral, a oração, a visitação e a administração exigem muitas mãos.

Many note that the church in Antioch became a great missionary-sending by listening and responding to God.

Acts 13:2 “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’”

Let’s not miss the fact that Antioch became a great missions church because they heard God calling them to send a missionary team. They did not send only Paul. They did not send Barnabas alone. They sent Paul AND Barnabas. Because they were listening to God. Team leadership was God’s idea.

The Apostle Paul has been called the greatest church planter ever, but it would be more accurate to say that he was the greatest church-planting team leader. Paul never planted alone. If anyone could have done it, it would be Paul. He had the passion, the apostolic power, the theological sophistication, the preaching ability, and more. But he did not work alone. Right from the beginning, God made sure of that.

Working as a team in high-pressure situations can be challenging, though. Eventually, Paul and Barnabas had a disagreement – about their team.

Acts 15:39 tells us that “They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus. Their partnership ended because of a disagreement about whether John Mark should be on their team. That is how important the team was.

The American Evangelical Church has promoted the great solo pastor, the “Man (usually not the Woman) of God” that everyone depends on. We’ll even refer to “Pastor So-and-So’s Church.”

That model has resulted in a myriad of problems. Even “successful” pastors get subjected to stress and loneliness to the point of wanting to quit.

Cell groups also need to be led by a team. It is healthier for the group and for the leaders. I am pleased when I hear a group member say, “I don’t want to lead, but I’ll help.” And that is exactly what God has been saying to his church for a couple of thousand years.

No enviaron solo a Pablo. No enviaron solo a Bernabé. Enviaron a Pablo Y a Bernabé.

Bernabé tomó a Marcos y zarpó hacia Chipre.

While He ministered to the crowds and called twelve apostles, Jesus invested most deeply in a core team of three — Peter, James, and John — whom He brought into the most intimate and weighty moments of His ministry: the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1), the raising of Jairus’s daughter (Mark 5:37), and His most vulnerable hour in Gethsemane (Mark 14:33). This inner circle was not coincidental. Jesus, who could have worked alone, chose to lead in community, demonstrating that plurality in leadership is not a concession to human weakness but a reflection of divine wisdom. Even the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit exist and work in relational plurality — and ministry leadership is meant to image that same reality.

The apostle Paul carried this model forward with striking intentionality throughout his missionary work. He consistently traveled and labored with a team: Barnabas, Silas, Timothy, Titus, Luke, and others (Acts 13:2–3; 1 Thessalonians 1:1; 2 Timothy 4:11). Crucially, when Paul planted churches, he didn’t simply install a single leader and move on — he appointed elders (plural) in every church (Acts 14:23; Titus 1:5). This was the normative practice, not the exception. The New Testament epistles reinforce this consistently: the churches in Jerusalem, Ephesus, Philippi, and elsewhere were each overseen by a plurality of elders (Acts 15:2; Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 5:17; James 5:14). The singular “pastor-in-charge” model that dominates much of contemporary church culture finds little support in the New Testament text.

The theological case for team leadership runs deeper than mere pragmatics or organizational preference. Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 reminds us that “two are better than one” because they provide mutual aid, accountability, and resilience — and “a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Proverbs 11:14 affirms that “in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”

Team leadership guards against the spiritual dangers of isolation, unchecked authority, and pride — vulnerabilities that have undone countless solo-leader ministries. Peter’s own instruction to “shepherd the flock of God among you… not domineering over those in your charge” (1 Peter 5:2–3) is addressed to elders — plural — exercising shared, humble oversight. Scripture never presents one-man rule as the ideal; it consistently portrays leadership as a shared, accountable, mutually submitting endeavor that reflects the communal nature of God Himself (Ephesians 4:11–13).

Much of the literature on small group ministry still focuses on the individual leader. But in the New Testament, leadership is consistently plural.

A lead pastor who tries to carry the cell vision alone will eventually burn out, delegate it away, or watch the movement stall. But a lead pastor surrounded by a pastoral team—whether full-time staff or a volunteer team of seasoned cell leaders and coaches—multiplies the vision, shares the weight, and models for everyone below what team ministry actually looks like. What happens at the top sets the pattern for everyone else.

Jesus modeled this from the beginning. He sent his disciples out two by two (Luke 10:1), and even within the Twelve, he invested in a smaller team—Peter, James, and John. The early church followed the same pattern. Aquila and Priscilla ministered together so closely that Scripture treats them as a unit—their names even reversed in some passages to signal genuinely shared ministry (Acts 18:26; Rom. 16:3; 1 Cor. 16:19; 2 Tim. 4:19). Paul never planted alone (Acts 12:25; 13:1; 15:39), and when he addressed the leaders at Ephesus, he spoke to the elders—plural—whom the Holy Spirit had made overseers of the flock (Acts 20:28). Team leadership in the New Testament isn’t the exception. It’s the norm.

So who belongs on this pastoral team? Those who are devoted to Jesus, walking in integrity, and fully committed to cell church ministry. In the early stages, that usually means those already leading cells. As the church grows, it should include those who have multiplied their groups. This aligns with the New Testament model, where elders were themselves leaders of house churches. Asking pastoral team members to lead a cell isn’t an extra requirement—it’s deeply biblical.

The role of the lead pastor is to minister to the team, who in turn minister to those under their care. Team life means praying together, sharing from God’s Word, and staying attuned to what the cell leaders are facing. Are the groups meeting regularly? Are leaders encouraged or discouraged? Where are the victories? Where are the challenges?

This is where clarity matters. Up-to-date information helps the team see what is really happening on the ground, so we can make timely, Spirit-led adjustments. I’ll be honest: I sense a growing weariness with lone-ranger leadership in the church—and a fresh hunger for something better.

Team leadership isn’t optional—it’s essential for fruitful small group ministry. Yes, shared authority means shared friction, and conflict will come. But the fruitfulness that flows from genuine team ministry far outweighs the difficulties. As Solomon wrote, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12).

During May, we’ll explore the power of the pastoral team over four weeks. Click here to receive these blogs in your email inbox.
