Belfast’s famous 5-star Merchant Hotel has launched a new cocktail list with strong green credentials.

Upholding The Merchant’s tradition of respecting the classics whilst showcasing passion and skill in crafting new cocktails, Volume V of The Cocktail Book at The Merchant Hotel features a pared back selection of 20 cocktails. The list aims to capture the zeitgeist of the cocktail scene, showcasing timeless favourites, Merchant signatures and innovative Merchant originals.

Sustainability was a big focus in curating the list. Building on The Merchant’s farm to table ethos elsewhere in the hotel, every effort has been made to streamline processes to limit unnecessary waste. Each element of the drinks has a purpose; nothing is wasted. Garnishes, if present, are edible or a by-product of another drink, and are always designed to enhance the piquancy of the cocktail. For example, bartenders handcraft their own orgeat syrup for use in several cocktails, and leftover almonds are used by the chefs to make biscuits.

Smaller Irish brands including Boatyard Vodka and Gin, Dunville’s Whiskey and Shortcross Poitín sit alongside longer-established premium spirits including Redbreast Whiskey, Appleton Rum, Beefeater Gin, Tanqueray 10, Woodford Reserve Bourbon and 1800 Tequila.

The Merchant is famous for once selling the world’s most expensive cocktail, so it’s no surprise that a Mai Tai remains a firm fixture on the list, albeit at a much more affordable price point of £14.95; a fraction of the £750 price tag of the original Trader Vic's Mai Tai, but a stunning drink, using a premium Appleton rum, El Dorado 5-year-old rum, nevertheless.

Regulars will be relieved to know that Merchant classics including a French 75 and The Sicilian, a refreshing mix of Beefeater Gin, Campari, Cointreau, orange sherbet, fresh grapefruit juice, lemon juice, orange bitters, originally perfected by The Dead Rabbit’s Jack McGarry during his time in The Merchant, remain on the list, along with a refined Boatyard Gin martini, and a Redbreast Lustau Tipperary, which are sure to be new favourites.

The Merchant’s classic Champagne Negroni - a refined take on the much fabled ‘Negroni Sbagliato’ which gained popularity thanks to House of Dragons star, Emma D'Arcy last year - also features, while the ‘Presbyterian No. 2’ is the third incarnation of the original Presbyterian. The quirky name and the drink originated in Scotland and is said to have been created by a forward-thinking 19th century minister to help his congregation circumnavigate the strict rules of the Church. It was updated by Sam Ross (Attaboy, Milk & Honey) in 2008. The Merchant has further evolved the drink using Irish whiskey (Dunville’s Peated Irish Whiskey) rather than scotch.

And a fun fact: perhaps surprisingly to some, ice is deemed by Merchant Cocktail Bar manager, Aaron Dugan to the most important part of any drink – creating the ‘igloo effect’, where it cools but does not dilute the liquid. The Merchant has spent years perfecting its ice and large hand carved ice cubes feature in many of their signature serves.

Commenting on the launch of the new cocktail list, he said: “We are proud to unveil our new cocktail menu, which after much consideration is a refined, pared back collection of timeless drinks, Merchant classics and new innovations. When considering the selection, we wanted to create a list that was approachable and encourages conversation with our bartenders, allowing them to share their knowledge and passion for crafting world-class cocktails with our guests.

“We are passionate about making our menu as sustainable as possible, and this carries through, not just in the drinks but in the menu itself, which is made from recycled paper. The menu will evolve and update twice a year to ensure we can source ingredients that are in season.”

The new cocktail menu is now available in The Cocktail Bar at The Merchant Hotel, Belfast.
The Best of British Beer Icebox is here to revolutionise summer craft beer enjoyment. Icebox is reusable and recyclable and keeps your cans at the perfect drinking temperature.
At the heart of the Craft Beer Icebox is an innovative reusable and recyclable cardboard ice bucket. Crafted from sturdy, eco-friendly materials, Icebox offers the perfect solution to keeping your beers refreshingly cool for hours.
Fantastic at a festival, brilliant on the beach, great in the garden and perfect for the park, Icebox comes with 6 x 440ml cans of craft beer from some of our favourite independent British breweries and can be used again and again, reducing waste.
All you need to do is remove the top, pop in some ice and you are good to go. When you’re finished, empty out any water out and flatten the box and it’s ready for next time, no need to wander around with a bulky plastic chiller.
LONDON (5 June): This summer, Food by National Geographic Traveller (UK) is celebrating the American South, with a deep dive into this iconic culinary destination.

From Alabama white sauce and Nashville hot chicken to Delta tamales and Kentucky’s bourbon-infused recipes, take a tour of the Southern states and meet the chefs, restaurateurs and home cooks breathing fresh life into the region’s cuisine.

Glen Mutel, editor of Food, said: “When it comes to food, the American South has such a fascinating tale to tell. It’s the story of comforts and traditions; of idiosyncrasies and innovation. It’s the tale of indigenous ingredients and outside influences. It’s the story of poverty and prosperity, of slavery and identity. And it’s profoundly multi-cultural.

“In this issue, we offer up a small taste of a vast and bewitching culinary region, from classic dishes and treasured institutions to pioneering chefs and new directions.”

Also in this issue, we head to Santorini to taste the Greek island’s beloved vinsanto dessert wine; visit Connemara, in the west of Ireland, to see how seaweed is making its way back on to menus; enjoy a family meal in Budapest; and sample the seafood of Aveiro, on the Portuguese coast. All this, plus the highlights of Barcelona, Tallinn and South Africa’s Western Cape.

The Foodservice Packaging Association (FPA) has issued guidance to address the claims made by producers of ‘plastic-free’ packaging.

In response to the big increase in foodservice packaging claiming to be plastic-free – coupled with the confusion and misunderstanding surrounding the validity of plastic-free packaging claims – the FPA has published a list of requirements to help inform packing buyers conducting due diligence prior to purchase.

“Our members, foodservice retailers and the general public need clarity”, says Martin Kersh, Executive Director at the FPA. “FPA members need to know what evidence they should be seeking to validate packaging, while foodservice retailers need to be confident they are making buying decisions based on evidence that is valid in the UK.

“Having board-based packaging that can hold hot fluids, sauces and oils safely, without some form of plastic lining or coating, is a huge attraction for retailers”, Kersh continues. “However, while plastic-free packs don’t contain the polyethylene (PE) or PLA most often used to make packs effective, many do contain other plastics, such as acrylic, as part of what is known as a dispersion coating. As such, there are packs claiming to be plastic-free, which are not”.

There is much confusion regarding the certification used to evidence claims of ‘plastic-free’ and symbols used to demonstrate conformity. Some certificates are produced by organisations not recognised by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) – and there are other symbols which are totally fictitious and a clear breach of the Competition & Markets Authority Green Claims Code.

The FPA guidance for plastic-free packaging is summarised below:

1.	Plastic-free must mean 100% plastic-free – with no intentionally added plastic present – either in the principal substrate or within the lining/coating.

2.	The finished pack (not only the material it consists of) must be independently tested and certified to be 100% plastic-free by a certification body recognised by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

3.	The testing must identify the presence of any plastic, and not just those plastics that might be present in the packaging the ‘plastic-free’ pack is seeking to replace.

4.	Certification issued by a country outside the UK does not necessarily validate a claim made in the UK. The due diligence for packaging being marketed in the UK needs to ensure the evidence/certification is accredited by UKAS.

5.	The only symbols shown must be those of the UKAS-accredited certifying body, accompanied by a license number.

“The guidance for plastic-free packaging falls into the same category as that required for all other claims regarding the origin and credentials of the certifying body”, adds Kersh. “All our members are required to operate their businesses in accordance with the FPA Code of Practice, which expressly forbids the use of any unsubstantiated claims”.

A full copy of the FPA guidance can be viewed here. Businesses seeking certification can visit the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) website to source accredited organisations. UKAS is appointed by government to assess and accredit organisations providing certification and testing facilities.
Martin Kersh, Executive Director of the FPA, is available for interviews and/or further comment.

The Foodservice Packaging Association (FPA) is a leading trade body, representing organisations associated with the foodservice packaging industry. Its membership includes both large global companies and smaller businesses – offering a broad range of foodservice products and services – together with organisations responsible for the waste collection, processing and recycling of foodservice packaging.

The FPA upholds the interests of its members when meeting with UK government, the devolved administrations, NGOs and other trade associations. Its executives sit on a number of steering groups, including: the DRS industry working group; the HMRC industry working group for the plastics tax; and the steering group for overall Defra reforms.

The FPA’s mission is to showcase innovation and provide a unified voice to advance and promote the foodservice packaging industry through advocacy and education. The annual FPA Exhibition and Awards celebrate members’ achievements and innovations; FPA Environment Seminars bring together high-level speakers from governments, industry and academia – allowing members to engage directly with policy makers and thought leaders; and the FPA’s weekly Digest disseminates complex issues, translating them into plain English to keep members informed of recent and upcoming legislation; environmental and sustainable issues; and the views and activities of relevant NGOs and other sector bodies.

The FPA is committed to promoting sustainable practices and responsible stewardship of the environment. All FPA members undertake to comply with the FPA Code of Practice, confirming that their organisations operate to the highest standards.

• London culture agency and creative incubator, What Does Not (WDN) hopes to harness youth culture’s explosive energy as a force for urban regeneration through emerging music initiative What Does Not NOISE

• The emerging music initiative seeks to regenerate areas depleted of authentic culture, after extensive on-the-ground research with music communities

• Putting emerging music talent centre stage in Zone 1 – new NOISE initiative by the all-female team finds undiscovered talent from across London and invites them to showcase their skills and jam in front of audiences unfamiliar with such raw creativity

• NOISE events currently take place at the Lower Third in Soho, previously the 12 Bar Club, which helped catapult Adele and Jeff Buckley to fame, in the historic ‘Tin Pan Alley’, where Bowie and the Stones recorded

• WDN has plans to take NOISE to various other central London venues that are open to supporting this initiative

London, 25 May, 2023

Parties with purpose have been making the rounds, but do they change anything? One ambitious, all-female social enterprise is making sure the world takes note: “If you’re left feeling a little empty by the ‘work hard, play hard’ cycle, we’re saying, it’s possible for your average night out to move the dial on the status quo,” says founder of culture agency and creative incubator, What Does Not (WDN), Christine Charitonos. She's building a team of powerhouse women who are setting out to shake things up in hospitality, the creative industries and beyond.

WDN argues that music is the Trojan horse of systems change. Now that they’ve got their horse through the gates, they’re inviting lovers of new music to celebrate with them at their emerging music showcase meets curated jam night, What Does Not NOISE - next event this Friday May 26th.

Meanwhile, they’ll continue making inroads with policymakers and corporates to bridge the grassroots with the ‘grasstops’. But how does any of this have a social impact?

“When we started embedding ourselves with the underground hip hop culture, we immediately spotted a huge problem: none of the circuit was in central London. And so NOISE was born,” says Christine. “Music being pushed into the ends was the symptom of the same disease afflicting every city: gentrification kills culture,” she adds.

“For decades the answer to regenerating areas was seen as a top-down approach of large developments. Monoculture. We’re saying, building on the heritage of a place, music can be the metabolism of our city. And we can harness the explosive energy of youth culture to breathe new life into the heart of London,” adds WDN’s partnerships and innovation director, Mary Valiakas.

“It means changing what we value, how we appreciate what is considered good, and important. We think of ourselves as advanced, but the world we live in definitely isn’t it. We can do better, so people and place can all thrive,” says Mary.

What Does Not is aiming to amplify its impact through brand partnerships for the rest of 2023 and beyond, kicking things off with cool, historic workwear brand, M.C.Overalls. Spokesperson, Rohaan Sajnani, has been to several WDN events and is a big believer in their credo that your spending power can pack a punch.

The other heavyweight in the core WDN trio, is Tamara Mikaberidze, events & project director – who brings over a decade of producing events for Universal Pictures to the fold. “Sure, corporate events are great, and you have big budgets for big productions – but we’ve been doing polished production and high curation levels, on a shoestring budget – that’s what experience in the industry gets you.”

You can experience NOISE for yourself this Friday, May 26 at the Lower Third in Soho. But if you’re reading this too late, follow What Does Not on Instagram for updates on upcoming events. With a cross-genre, emerging music festival in the pipeline too.

About What Does Not

What Does Not is a culture agency and creative incubator, combining the functions of an events company, prep school, community, and creative agency. It is an ecosystem of ecosystems for living a life with purpose, with genuine human connection at its core. They harness the power of humans to rewrite outdated narratives, and celebrate unorthodox thinking. They believe that cutting across all the silos and layers of society is the way to light the creative spark that’s dormant in everyone – humans and brands. Some brands they’ve worked with include Soho House, The Ministry and The Outernet.

Hive Mind Mead & Brew Co. has launched a new range of naturally-flavoured sparkling mead in cans.

The new Hive Mind Sparkling Mead range is 4% ABV and comes in four flavours - ginger, elderflower, rhubarb and pure honey. For the first time, it will be available in 330ml cans, sold individually or as a boxed four-pack containing one of each flavour. Two more flavours, sour cherry and honey & hops will also soon be added to the range.

All of the company’s mead is gluten free, made with natural ingredients and uses British honey, including honey from its own hives in the Wye Valley, where its beekeeping supports local biodiversity, habitat conservation and important pollinator populations.

Showcasing their beekeeping heritage, the sparkling mead cans carry new Hive Mind branding, based around colourful honeycomb illustrations, and highlight the approximately 300,000 flowers visited and 50,000 miles flown by bees to make the honey for every can. The Sparkling Mead is launching on 20 May to coincide with World Bee Day - an international day of awareness in support of these vital pollinators.

The meadery was launched in 2018 as the Wye Valley Meadery by beekeeping brothers Kit and Matt Newell, and has recently rebranded as the Hive Mind Mead & Brew Co. The brothers have been pioneers in a UK resurgence in mead-making, taking one of the world’s oldest alcoholic drinks and creating new modern styles from session-strength light and refreshing sparkling meads through to stronger, more traditional wine-style and barrel-aged meads.

Hive Mind co-founder Kit Newell said:
“We’ve been creating new meads which have been at the forefront of growing interest in the product here in the UK, pioneering modern styles and changing perceptions of this versatile drink. Modern mead can stand head to head with beers, wines or spirits for its range of flavour profiles, as a base for cocktails or as a different option for food pairing.

“Our new session strength (4%) Sparkling Mead cans have been created to be light and refreshing, flavoured with natural and seasonal ingredients to make them a great summer drink for all occasions. Canning our sparkling mead makes it more portable for outdoor events, easy to chill and it’s a more sustainable option than glass.

“As beekeepers, we understand the importance of protecting nature, supporting pollinators, creating sustainable products and working as part of the community.
Our new Hive Mind brand highlights our beekeeping heritage and shares our company’s mission to help the honeybees through the honey we make and our low impact, low intervention approach to brewing, ” he said.

The Hive Mind Sparkling Mead range will be available nationwide from independent retailers, delis and farm shops or direct from Hive Mind’s website.

Other Hive Mind products include an award-winning wine-style Traditional Mead, Oak Whiskey Barrel-Aged Traditional Mead and honey beers including a 3 Star Great Taste Award-winning Smoked Honey Porter, a honey pilsner called ‘Nectar’ and a pollen-infused hazy pale called ‘Pollinator’.

“Anyone brought up in Scandinavia and Germany will know Schnapps as it was a huge part of our drinking culture. I have very fond memories of the Schnapps drinking songs we used to sing back in the early 70s! The unique flavour of Schnapps makes me think of some great times, as I am sure it does for many other people too, and Flävar is inspired by this retro drinking experience mixed with the UK's thirst for dessert-style flavours.”

About the National Geographic Traveller (UK) Food Festival

Organised by APL Media, publisher of the magazines National Geographic Traveller (UK) and Food by National Geographic Traveller (UK), the first National Geographic Traveller (UK) Food Festival took place in July 2019. The event was held over two days (19-20 July 2019) at Islington’s Business Design Centre and attracted 5,500 attendees, 45 exhibitors and 59 performers (chefs, speakers and authors).

Following on from the success of the inaugural event in 2019, and after a two-year break due to Covid-19, the Food Festival returned to the Business Design Centre in 2022, with more than 6,000 food-lovers, mainly from London and the South East, visiting over the two days (16-17 July).

Seventy-eight exhibitors offered food, drink and expertise, with major sponsors including the Greece National Tourism Organisation, Food & Drink Wales, the Italian National Tourist Board, Parmigiano Reggiano and the Azerbaijan Tourism Board. In the two Masterclass Theatres, some of the world’s top chefs recreated dishes from as far afield as Louisiana, the Seychelles, Ecuador and Montenegro. foodfestival.natgeotraveller.co.uk

- Funding will boost brand awareness and expand operations

Bristol-based technology company Kurve which specialises in providing electronic self-service POS (Point of Sale) solutions to the hospitality sector has secured £250k of seed capital to kickstart an ambitious growth of 500% by 2027. The company is aiming to profit from the surge in demand for self-service kiosks for ordering in quick service restaurants (QSRs) across the UK.

Kurve was founded in July 2021 and already has 110 customers with over 210 sites. Its SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) based in-store kiosk, PoS, web and mobile self-service offerings have been designed to assist hospitality operators become more profitable by achieving higher transaction values, increased throughput, improved labour productivity and enhanced customer loyalty.

According to Kurve Founder and CEO, Steven Boyes the initial funding will be used to invest heavily in marketing and brand awareness over the next 9-12 months and also further develop its Operations Team to rapidly expand its customer base. He commented, “Following the pandemic hospitality operators have faced growing pressures of staff shortages and escalating operational costs. Self-service has not only seen a rise in its appeal, especially amongst younger consumers, it also significantly reduces costs, increases average transaction values and boosts customer satisfaction.

We see a massive untapped opportunity for Kurve’s in-store kiosk, PoS, web or mobile platform that is ideal for hospitality operators looking to make an easy and affordable switch to contactless ordering. We offer users a slick and easy user experience and our cloud-based solutions can also integrate into existing PoS systems.”

Industry research has revealed that 84% of Generation Z choose to visit a restaurant with a self-serve kiosk over and above those restaurants without and according to analyst Forbes, 65% of customers said they would be more willing to visit a restaurant if self-service kiosks were available.

Backing by Kurve customer

Kurve has received seed capital of £250k with participants in the funding round including Mark Lilley, the founder of Abokado, a leading healthy grab-and-go chain and one of Kurve’s customers.

Mark Lilley commented on his own experience of using Kurve’s self-service solutions and his decision to invest, “I have seen first-hand how powerful and industry-leading the Kurve platform is. Introducing kiosks, mobile self-service and digital loyalty into Abokado has been transformational and Kurve’s product has marked benefits over the competition. All the signs are that this market is set for huge growth, across both hospitality and retail, and I’m delighted to have been able to invest. I look forward to seeing Steve and the team take Kurve from strength to strength.”

At Retail Technology Show 2023 (26 - 27 April, Olympia, London), international POS hardware solutions provider Star Micronics will be demonstrating its latest innovative point-of-sale solutions on Stand 6G10 with a range of POS, payment and kiosk providers including Evoke, ExtendaGO, NewStore, Sitoo, Smart Volution, Square, SumUp and Melford Technologies Ltd as well as Zettle by PayPal.

Introducing a variety of new products for retail and hospitality POS at the event, Star will be exhibiting its latest printer in the Star mCollection, mC-Label. Ideal for a range of applications and environments including food labelling in QSR, retail, healthcare and logistics, this versatile printer can print on a variety of media including die cut, linerless and continuous labels. Offering flexible connectivity including USB-C, LAN and Star CloudPRNT™, the printer is designed to work with traditional systems, network, web-based systems or connected to a wide range of tablets or mobile devices, where the printer’s USB-C port can power and charge the device as well as provide network tethering via Star’s SteadyLAN+ technology.

Furthermore, Star’s new TetherLAN technology included with the mC-Label allows a tablet or device with an active cellular (4G, 5G) or WiFi connection to share that connection with the mC-Label printer. This enables the printer to then print directly from cloud-based services, including StarPrinter.Online, whilst also enabling remote management and diagnostics, as well as making any supported, connected USB peripherals “Cloud Enabled”.

Building on its POS printer expertise, Star has expanded its portfolio to encompass a range of POS peripherals. As a result, businesses can develop POS systems in the knowledge all products and peripherals are successfully integrated and provided by a single manufacturer. At the event, Star will be exhibiting its versatile tablet stands for retail and hospitality POS, visitor management and self-service applications, alongside its CD4 series of cash drawers.

The universal mEnclosure tablet holder for a wide range of Apple, Android and Windows tablets provides a versatile and secure solution that is compatible with Star’s new mUnite stands. Available in black or white, the mUnite stands maintain a clean design, concealing all the cables that keep devices connected whilst routing power supplies under the counter to recapture space in busy environments. With desk mounted, wall mounted and floor standing versions available, the mUnite stands offer a flexible solution for retail, hospitality, visitor management and any environment in which customer interaction is key.

The new CD4 series of cash drawers is available in two sizes for medium and high cash volume applications. With a black or white finish and stainless steel front design, this series complements the Star printer and mUnite tablet stand range and provides the versatility retail and hospitality businesses demand.

Alongside hardware, Star offers additional software and integration tools for enhanced connectivity. Star’s CloudPRNT technology benefits retail and hospitality by enabling customer orders to be sent directly to the printer from an online ordering service or app, eliminating the need for an additional tablet in the store, bar or restaurant.

For a fully managed service, Star will be demonstrating its unique StarPrinter.Online dedicated service for businesses to manage the printer estate with minimal setup time and cost as well as near zero integration. This allows printing direct from an ordering website through the REST API or direct from the page with JavaScript, or even via email. The ordering service can not only communicate directly with the printer to create print jobs but also receive the status of the printer estate. Thanks to an online dashboard, users have an overview of all devices and activity including reliable tracking of print jobs with notification of device status changes, barcode scans, new device connections to a group, etc. Additional printers and peripherals can simply be added without the need for server upgrades.

A commitment to creating innovative solutions, combined with Star’s renowned expertise in the thriving kiosk market, has resulted in successful integrations of both its Sanei and packaged printer ranges with Star looking to further expand its range of Sanei printers in response to growing demand for compact kiosk printing solutions.

Based on an established long-term partnership with Evoke, Star printers have been integrated into a diverse range of kiosks for tier one retail and hospitality chains for retail check-out and Click & Collect applications as well as food and beverage ordering. On the stand, visitors will find the Star mC-Print3 front loading kiosk printer integrated with the versatile Evoke EV Serve food ordering kiosk. Also on display will be SumUp’s recently launched food ordering kiosk, designed in partnership with Melford Technologies Ltd and incorporating the Star mC-Print3.

“At the Retail Technology Show 2023, visitors to the Star stand will find an extensive range of innovative and versatile POS solutions”, states Simon Martin, Director & General Manager, Star Micronics EMEA. “Designed for a variety of POS and kiosk applications, Star’s solutions successfully provide the flexibility and unique features that allow businesses of all sizes to fully leverage the potential of retail technology.”
Manufacturer is honoured with the UK’s most prestigious commercial award for innovation

Beccles, Suffolk, 21 April 2023. PCE Automation Ltd today announced that the company has been awarded the King’s Award for Enterprise, in recognition of its excellence in innovation.

PCE Automation Ltd specialises in bespoke automation, repeat automation, and value-added services, including pre-automation and aftercare services to address the varying needs of customers across a range of industry sectors including ocular, medical and pharmaceutical. Its product handling, assembling, and testing systems have a global reputation for innovation and quality. Founded in 1961 by Ernest James Cook, the company was previously awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2020 for international trade putting it in a select group of companies who have won both the Queen’s and King’s Awards for Enterprise. PCE is a trusted partner to many blue-chip, industry-leading life science organisations around the world.

The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Rishi Sunak MP, recommended that the company should receive one of the inaugural King’s Awards for Enterprise, in recognition of a key innovative project in the ocular sector - which it delivered for a major global manufacturer of contact lenses. The project enabled the manufacturer of ‘made to order’ on demand (MTO) silicone hydro lenses to reduce its lead times to the end-user and greatly enhance the efficiency, flexibility and scalability of the manufacturing process. In doing so, the company has uncovered major commercial opportunities and an increase in market share. Not only was the manufacturing time cut, but the productivity output was increased by circa 360%.

CEO, James Cook commented “The King’s Award for Enterprise is the most prestigious British business award because of its provenance as the Queen’s Award. To be recognised for our contribution to innovation reflects the huge team effort made by each member of our staff to develop a range of world-leading solutions with innovation incorporated across the board - in design, project management, engineering and software programming.”

Employing 99 staff at its Beccles headquarters and 22 at its Lutterworth site, PCE is focused on staff empowerment, achievements and well-being and has exciting expansion plans to develop its site, recruit more staff and expand its presence within Europe. In 2022 PCE announced an ongoing acquisition of an Irish organisation, which will see it become a multinational corporation, helping to expand its geographical presence and diversification into numerous automation growth sectors.

MP for Waveney, Peter Aldous MP, supported the application for the King’s Award for Enterprise and has taken an active interest in the company. He commented, “Congratulations to the team at PCE Automation on this prestigious accolade. With a focus on empowering employees, PCE is a business of which East Anglia and Suffolk can be proud”.

In its inaugural year, the King’s Award for Enterprise follows 57 years of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, where previous winners included J.P Morgan, iCandy, Veolia and Willmott Dixon.

The next celebratory steps for PCE include a listing in a special edition of the London Gazette, published in April, which will carry the names of all of the winners. The London Gazette is the oldest English newspaper and is an official journal of record of the British Government. A Grant of Appointment ceremony will take place at PCE’s office (date tba) with the county’s Lord Lieutenant and local VIPs. The Lord Lieutenant is His Majesty The King’s local representative and will personally present a crystal trophy to the PCE team. In addition, CEO, James Cook will visit Buckingham Palace in the summer for a celebratory reception, which is hosted by His Majesty King Charles III.

Leading natural pet supplement manufacturer Lintbells has been honoured with the first ever King’s Award for Enterprise for its work in international trade.

It is the third time the company has received such a prestigious royal accolade, having previously earned The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Innovation in 2016 and The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Innovation: International Trade in 2018.

The new King’s Award for Enterprise reflects the continued growth of Lintbells and expansion in international markets and significant launch into the US.

Following the risks from Brexit , Lintbells made a strategic choice to expand internationally, most notably increasing its presence in the US Market. Part of this expansion included launching new products, sales channels, and acquiring a new local HQ, as well as recruiting talent to the company. Lintbells also continued its expansion across other international markets with the introduction of skin, digestive and calming ranges, alongside its core joint supplement, YuMOVE.

One of the world’s most iconic golf resorts and 4-time host of The Ryder Cup, The Belfry Hotel and Resort in Sutton Coldfield has teamed up with Berkshire-based Hawkridge Distillers to create a distinctive and delicious new London Dry Gin.

The name of the gin, “1960” represents the year The Belfry was founded. Many of its botanicals have been carefully selected from the resort. Roses and lavender picked from the resort’s courtyard, willow from the golf courses and honey harvested from its very own “Belfry Bees.”

Tasting notes for 1960 describe it as having a traditional juniper heart with a characterful citrus forward. The home-grown botanicals and honey ensure the gin is delicate but fragrant, with distinctive floral tones that give way to a beautiful long-lasting pine aroma. The gin has been specially crafted to create a soft and smooth taste and the home-grown botanicals in the blend reflect the resort’s commitment to using locally sourced produce wherever possible.

The tipple is presented in a stylish Belfry Bell shaped cut glass bottle topped with a gold glass golf ball as a nod to the resort’s distinguished golf heritage.

“We’re delighted to be serving guests our new 1960 gin - it’s been an exciting journey from distilling to the final stages of production and then having our first taste of the finished gin”, said Varun Shetty, Director of Food and Beverage at The Belfry Hotel & Resort.

“It was very important to us to ensure that the gin is reflective of the beautiful environment at The Belfry and of our commitment to sustainability. To achieve this, we have had botanicals and produce from across the resort incorporated into the blend, something we felt was absolutely crucial to do. We hope our guests love 1960 as much as we do!”

In line with environmental policies at The Belfry, once empty all 1960 bottles from the resort will be sent to the distillery to be refilled and returned.

At the prestigious IWSC 2023 awards, the quality of the new gin was recognised with a much-coveted Bronze Medal in the London Dry “taste” category.

“The whole project working with The Belfry has been a wonderful journey from start to finish. The Belfry team were very clear on what they wanted from start to finish. Their exacting standards have been welcomed by our distilling team and we feel we have created something very special which The Belfry guests will simply love,” said Phil Howarth, Managing Director at Hawkridge Distillers.

Hawkridge Distillers is a multi-award-winning distillery with an ever-growing collection of customer and own-label gins. Their clients include Michelin starred restaurants, some of the world’s top hotels and even the British Army.
