Jesus and Moms – 6 Ways to Show Love to Your Children

Show notes: What I’d like to share tonight is a way to embrace the vocation and high calling of motherhood that keeps our eyes on Christ.

First, let’s look at how Jesus taught. This will help us in our daily, minute-by-minute instruction of our children no matter what age they may be. This is also called relationship.

If we look at the life of Christ we see that Jesus was loving. He repeated spiritual truths over and over so that people might understand. He walked among the people healing them, by asking them questions, and by imparting truth through ways they could understand (Mark 4:34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.)

Jesus was someone who attracted others. He had a way of pointing to the Father that satisfied the needs of people. He knew how to satisfy their greatest spiritual needs. Even when they just returned for more bread, he knew they had a greater need.

6 Ways to Show Love to Your Children

Here are ways he did just that, and how as Moms we can be encouraged that if we will follow the master Jesus will meet their needs and our own.

1. Children need to feel safe, loved, and important.  Do you have a consistent temperament? Do you meet as well as you are able your children’s basic needs for clothing, shelter, and food? Is your discipline consistent or are your children unsure of what to expect? Can your child confide in your? We are especially admonished not to provoke our children to anger or discouragement (Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Colossians 3:21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.Jesus makes us feel safe, loved, and important in his very life (lived sinlessly), death (for our sins), and resurrection (for our justification) that we might have peace with God the Father, Romans chapter 4.
2. Children must trust their parents Do you keep your word to your children? Do you keep your word to others so your children witness this? Do you do your best to make sure that trustworthy adults influence your children? Remember when we talked about how Jesus patiently repeated things to his followers (and for our benefit) so we’d understand? This built trust. We can trust him because He did exactly what he said he would do. Read Mark 8,9, and 10. He said he would suffer, die, and rise. He did.
3. Children need to know their worth Do your children understand that their value as a human and made in the image of God? Do your children see how important they are to you by the time and real attention you give to them? Are you full of distraction? God’s Word tells us children are a heritage (Psalm 127) and fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139), and that the Father would hold nothing back in saving them should they stray, and in fact he didn’t hold back his only son. (Matthew 18 and the parable of the lost sheep)
4. Children need to see their purpose and calling Do your children see that they’ve been created by God and live in the culture and time we live in “for such a time as this”. Do you? Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
5. Children need chores Constant entertainment is soul-destroying to anyone, especially a child. There is value in work that sparks their creativity and curiosity and helps them see their place in God’s world. Again, Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
6. Wisdom and role models- Children need your guidance and the guidance of trusted adults, especially as they become young adults themselves to help grow discernment. Who do you know that exhibits wisdom that would be a good influence? Do you exhibit wisdom to your children? Proverbs 13:20 tells us, “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

Okay, honestly. Are you sitting there wondering what in the world  is a funky fresh back to back to homeschool celebration? It’s that type of back to homeschool celebration idea every homeschool mom needs in order to get back in the groove after a super awesome summer break. You know what I mean. I’m that mom. You’re that mom. So let’s get to it.

Here are your 11 Funky Fresh Back to Homeschool Celebration Ideas.

Funky Fresh Back to Homeschool Countdown

Okay, to make the list, the idea had to have 2 criteria. First, it had to be funky. And by funky I mean it had to be something your kids enjoy, but also might roll their eyes at. (If you allow your kids to roll their eyes. Which of course, no self-respecting homeschool perfectionist ever would.)

Second, it had to be fresh. Fresh as in new and not your typical back to homeschool countdown lists.  And of course, it had to be a back to homeschool celebration.  Are you ready, mama? Let’s do this thing.

1. Host a Popcorn and Movie Party

Don’t dust of those homeschool books just yet. Mom, you have the power to make a back to school celebration they’ll remember all year long. You can host a popcorn and movie party. All day.

2. Matching Tee Shirts

Visit your local Hobby Lobby or Walmart and grab some low price tee shirts, tee shirt paint, markers, or even tie dye. Put a tablecloth down on the kitchen table and let everyone go to town designing their own back to homeschool celebration tee shirt. If you want them to match, add your homeschool theme or Bible verse. Voila! Insta worthy.

3. Write a Homeschool Anthem

You can totally do this. Pick a familiar tune, such as your state song or favorite hymn. Change out the words to reflect your unique homeschool. Keep it fun and reverent. Dad can vote on the winner (if you’re the competitive type family), or treat everyone to a trip for soft serve ice cream to celebrate.

4. Start with a Field Trip Someplace Weird

Search out an unusual and  unique to your region field trip spot and make a day of it. It doesn’t need to be educational. Fun is the name of the game. It can be food related, someplace you love to go, or someplace you’ve never been.

5. Host an Open House

I know, you’re thinking NO WAY. After all, you get enough flack over homeschooling. The last thing you want to do is invite the naysayers in! I’m not talking about that type of open house. I’m suggesting you organize your homeschool stuff, go ahead and have your first week of homeschooling, and on that weekend invite the welcoming grandparents and family members over to celebrate with you. Show off your best sample from last year or the week and let your more outgoing kiddos share a poem, picture, or paper. Go ahead and brag a little on all those color coordinated binders.

6. Paper Shredding

Every year should be a fresh start for your kids, and for you. Why not make it official? You can pick up an inexpensive paper shredder from Walmart or Amazon for the event. Explain to your students that last year was last year. It’s time for a fresh start. Allow them to pick something from their last year’s work, or write a list that only they read. One by one shred the list or work. When the little ceremony is done, give thanks in prayer for new beginnings.

7. Audio Book Bonanza

If you’re looking for a non visual way to have some non bookish back to homeschool celebration fun, try audiobooks. Let the kiddos draw, craft, play legos, play a board game, or rest while listening to audiobooks. Our family enjoyed Lamplighters, Laura Ingalls, Where the Red Fern Grows, and Your Story Hour.

8. Homeschool in Reverse

Be a student in your own homeschool for the day. Let the kids take turns as instructor. Encourage fun and parody. It’s worthwhile to establish ground rules so parody doesn’t get taken too far and feelings aren’t hurt. But, if you’re a family who enjoys and thrives on this kind of fun, let me tell you, you’ll learn heaps about how your kids view their homeschool experience. Keep an open mind and heart.

9. Different Decade Homeschool Day

I could’ve called this one Homeschool Appreciation Day, for truly we stand on the shoulders of giants in homeschooling. Pick a decade when homeschooling wasn’t legal in your state, or when legislation was oppressive. Don’t scare your kids, but do help them see how the freedom to homeschool was hard won. Give thanks in prayer for the freedom to legally homeschool.

10. Christmas List Making Homeschool Style

Who doesn’t love to shop or make a wish list? Collect catalogs from homeschooling vendors, visit Amazon.com, visit your favorite homeschool website, or even buzz the Walmart with notepads in hand. Give each student a budget then make a wish list of items related to learning that you’d love to have show up under your make believe homeschool tree.

Why Every Homeschool Mom Needs a Homeschool BFF

Every homeschool mom goes through a similar experience. We start with the conviction that we should homeschool our children. Moms get excited with shopping for and choosing curriculum. We spend our summer planning.

Then we begin. And it’s not long before we start to feel like we’re going at this thing alone.

We Question Ourselves

Once the loneliness sets in we start to question our decision to homeschool.

One days when our children’s behavior or lack of interest in their studies sets in, we want to give in and hand it over to someone else. Even if we don’t admit that out loud.

It doesn’t mean we’ve lost faith in our conviction, it just means we really are meant to be in community with one another. We need a friend who gets it.

Reaching out to Friends and Finding a Homeschool BFF

This is where having a homeschool BFF can really make your homeschool experience so much better. She understands your struggles. She can hold you up with you’re feeling down. It’s often that homeschool mom BFF who reminds you of why you’re doing this in the first place. And if she’s a true friend she points you back to Jesus, so you don’t lose your way.

Friends for Life

And these friends aren’t just friends for a season. You never really outgrow them. In this podcast I share a little about Mom School and how that experience introduced me to a circle of friends who are still my friends to this day. Good friends.

When determining if a virtual assistant business is a good work from home opportunity for a homeschool mom, it helps to take a virtual assessment.  Ask yourself the following questions to help you make a sound decision.

Many homeschooling moms have heard the buzz about working at home. Is it possible to work at home and have a work at home business?

It’s vital to consider that homeschooling is your first commitment. You’ve made the promise to your family.

Ask yourself:

• Can I prioritize my homeschool over my business and still bless my family financially?
• Is it possible to serve my family and my clients in a way that doesn’t stress me out?
• Can you manage a “side hustle” and still homeschool well?

Let’s look at what a virtual assistant is and what’s required.

First, What is a Virtual Assistant?

A virtual assistant is an individual who helps manage portions of a business owner’s business. Normally a freelance worker, you can work your business from anywhere. A homeschooling mom is an ideal fit for this! She’s likely already a working through the three areas you need to master to be successful!

They are …

1. Manage (your VA Business)

• Time- Are you able to manage the time necessary to work your business? Can you handle the daily life interruptions? Can you balance homeschooling, working at home, and family life?
• Money- Can you handle the ebb and flow the income? Are you able to manage taxes due? Can you make wise spending choices?
• Instructions – Are you willing to take the time to follow instructions and learn the needs of a client? Can you balance the client needs with the needs of a homeschooling moms life?
• Alone time- Do you have a strategy for handling time alone and make the best use of that time?

2. Market (your VA Business)

• Don’t be shy! Are you willing to get yourself out there? This often takes time and that’s a precious commodity for a homeschooling mom. Can you make this work?
• What are you good at? Make a list of your skill set. Think about the things you already know and do as a homeschool mom that can translate to a VA business.
• Ideal Client, what’s that? Are you able to think about who you already know that you might be able to help with their business. This is likely the homeschooling community.

3. Master (your VA Business)

Learning:

Are you willing to invest your time and resources into what’s necessary to grow your skill set and establish your business properly?

Growing:

Are you willing to establish the processes  and systems you need in order to grow your business?

Scaling:

Would you say that you’re willing to learn to manage a team or subcontractors in order to make an independent income?

How can you homeschool and have a virtual assistant business and do both well. The 3 skills we’ve covered are your launch pad.

Think of the time commitment.

Homeschooling is often a full time job.

• Do you have the support of your spouse and family to add to that responsibility?
• Can you use your managed free-time to build a business without building resentment in your children?
• Is it possible to stay on top of the legal requirements to homeschool while building a business?

I’m confident that you can, but this is something that you have to consider for yourself. Sit down and talk to your spouse and family. Listen with an open mind to their objects and considerations. Manage everyone’s expectations and you’re sure to have the answer and the confidence you need moving forward.

With the right support, an honest look at your homeschool mama priorities, and a commitment to do things well, you can build a business that will bless your family.

Show notes: What I’d like to share tonight is a way to embrace the vocation and high calling of motherhood that keeps our eyes on Christ.

First, let’s look at how Jesus taught. This will help us in our daily, minute-by-minute instruction of our children no matter what age they may be. This is also called relationship.

If we look at the life of Christ we see that Jesus was loving. He repeated spiritual truths over and over so that people might understand. He walked among the people healing them, by asking them questions, and by imparting truth through ways they could understand (Mark 4:34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.)

Jesus was someone who attracted others. He had a way of pointing to the Father that satisfied the needs of people. He knew how to satisfy their greatest spiritual needs. Even when they just returned for more bread, he knew they had a greater need.

6 Ways to Show Love to Your Children

Here are ways he did just that, and how as Moms we can be encouraged that if we will follow the master Jesus will meet their needs and our own.

1. Children need to feel safe, loved, and important.  Do you have a consistent temperament? Do you meet as well as you are able your children’s basic needs for clothing, shelter, and food? Is your discipline consistent or are your children unsure of what to expect? Can your child confide in your? We are especially admonished not to provoke our children to anger or discouragement (Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Colossians 3:21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.Jesus makes us feel safe, loved, and important in his very life (lived sinlessly), death (for our sins), and resurrection (for our justification) that we might have peace with God the Father, Romans chapter 4.
2. Children must trust their parents Do you keep your word to your children? Do you keep your word to others so your children witness this? Do you do your best to make sure that trustworthy adults influence your children? Remember when we talked about how Jesus patiently repeated things to his followers (and for our benefit) so we’d understand? This built trust. We can trust him because He did exactly what he said he would do. Read Mark 8,9, and 10. He said he would suffer, die, and rise. He did.
3. Children need to know their worth Do your children understand that their value as a human and made in the image of God? Do your children see how important they are to you by the time and real attention you give to them? Are you full of distraction? God’s Word tells us children are a heritage (Psalm 127) and fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139), and that the Father would hold nothing back in saving them should they stray, and in fact he didn’t hold back his only son. (Matthew 18 and the parable of the lost sheep)
4. Children need to see their purpose and calling Do your children see that they’ve been created by God and live in the culture and time we live in “for such a time as this”. Do you? Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
5. Children need chores Constant entertainment is soul-destroying to anyone, especially a child. There is value in work that sparks their creativity and curiosity and helps them see their place in God’s world. Again, Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
6. Wisdom and role models- Children need your guidance and the guidance of trusted adults, especially as they become young adults themselves to help grow discernment. Who do you know that exhibits wisdom that would be a good influence? Do you exhibit wisdom to your children? Proverbs 13:20 tells us, “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

The Myth of Balance

Balance. What is it anyway? You might be surprised (I know I was) to learn that balance has to do with an equality of passions. As Webster’s 1828 tells us, “As balance signifies equal weight, or equality, it is by custom used for the weight or sum necessary to make two unequal weights or sums equal; that which is necessary to bring them to a balance or equipoise. ”

And now we know why balance is a myth.

There is no way we can ascribe equality to the moving pieces of our lives, especially when we are talking about our children. Why do moms agonize over going back to work, taking time for themselves, or even taking a weekend away with their spouse. I think it’s because as moms, we are always balancing the needs of our family against every other need.

So, you guessed it — there’s always a certain amount of imbalance.

This also means that the other things vying for importance, will become “most important” at certain times and not at others. The struggle is real! And it’s OKAY.

Tips to Keep Things Moving

So, what’s a girl to do? Well, first let’s keep things moving. This means evaluating our priorities. ( Listen to the previous podcasts, Developing a Wholehearted Business Mindset or Recovering from Burnout).

Once we have our priorities outlined, they deserve the attention that systems and processes in your business along with a doable schedule at home can provide.

Some ideas to outline your priorities in this way include:

• keeping a simple schedule
• asking for help from your spouse and older children or even grandparents
• scheduling your time in three blocks – work time, school time, family time
• organize your homeschool, home, life, and business

Eyes on the Prize

In the end, it’s helpful to keep our eyes on the prize. Why are we trying to do all.the.things anyway? What’s our goal? Why do we want a business, ministry, or work at home career?

If by your providing additional income to your family helps you to stay home with your children, and that’s one of your goals, remind yourself of that very thing.

This helps you count all the chaos as blessing.

The truth is, yes, we are sometimes checking our phones with kids in tow while dropping our oldest off at Japanese lessons. But, we’re doing this in the middle of the day, around our own schedules, accommodating the needs of our family. That freedom is priceless.

And learning to, not balance anything, but give priority to the things that we’re called to do, is a beautiful thing.

Action Step:

This week, make a list of all of the reasons you are thankful for the chaos that is working at home.

Bible Verses to Help You Gain “Balance”-

Matthew 6:33-34 // But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Proverbs 11:2 // A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight.

Philippians 4:8 // Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Isaiah 41:13  // For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”

Colossians 3:17  // And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

How to Build Your Business While Building Each Other Up

Our tongues are mighty enough to inflict wounds or build one another up. How often do we stop and think about the power we have to build up our business through our speech? Tune into Mommy Jammies Podcast as Gina talks about keeping our conversation holy.

Embrace Life

In our last two podcasts, we’ve taken a look at setting our priorities on the right course, those aligned with our values. Let’s talk a little today about how to build your business while building each other up.

Community

When Jesus came to Earth he created a community – a community of the Redeemed. God Himself is a community in the form of the Trinity!

It’s hard wired in each one of us to desire community with one another. It’s one of the ways we can truly embrace life – by reaching out to others! While sin separated us in the Fall, and we still don’t love one another perfectly, Jesus wants us to experience it. Though we experience God’s saving grace individually, we can be transformed (sanctified) within a community. This community isn’t just the church or our family, but also our business relationships.

Indeed, our businesses can require a good portion of our attention and can be a primary way the Lord sanctifies us, desiring that we would in fact- embrace life.

See the Day Fill up with Good

That brings me to seeing the day fill up with good. Have you ever had one of those days where nothing seems to go right? You complain, procrastinate, and compare to the point that you just want to crawl back in bed. While those days sometimes happen outside of our control, often those days can be a result of what the rest of the verse says to us.

In our business dealings, how often do we fall prey to sharing screenshots of conversations, saying things we shouldn’t, or taking concerns to a friend first- rather than the Lord. I know I’ve been guilty of all of those and in fact struggle with this. It’s a distorted version of community, isn’t it?

What can we “put off” and “put on” in order to overcome this struggle? How can we build trust, friendship, and respect with our business colleagues using these put off’s and put on’s?

Say Nothing Evil or Hurtful

Just yesterday a friend called me deeply hurt by words said to her. Words! She wasn’t physically harmed and she wasn’t threatened. No, she was laughed at for a business idea by a friend. This hurt her in the moment and she was still dealing with it the next morning.

It’s hard for us to realize that if we speak without weighing our speech (thinking how it might impact another), we can deeply would someone we actually care about.

How likely is this friend I mention going to be willing to share her business ideas with others again? What will she have to overcome and forgive in order to now show up in the world with her awesome idea?

Snub Evil and Cultivate Good

What can we do when a business friendship is based on a list of who to like and who not to like? Is it possible that maintaining these types of business friendships actually harm your own business and reputation? They can and they do.

We all know that person (and in fact, if we look in the mirror we’re guilty, too) who can’t wait to tell you the ten reasons not to like so and so. While it’s good in business circles to give general warnings and guidance to friends in order to keep them from a bad business deal, it’s not necessary to attach personal descriptives about another person.

Honestly, this is a difficult situation sometimes, but having a policy of carefulness and seeking Wisdom on the subject of sharing about another individual is a good one. Most business mamas are savvy enough to recognize a fraud or bad business relationship.

Run After Peace for All You’re Worth

That brings us back to the beginning. Remember in our last podcast, we determined Who gives us our Peace and Worth. If we’re to run after peace for all we’re worth, let that sink in. God created us for a purpose. Our businesses have a story to tell to the world and pursuing peace in our business relationships will (in the long run) build up our businesses.

Action Point:

Spend some time in prayer, reflecting on ways you tend to run after discord instead of peace. How does knowing what you’re worth and running after peace have the potential to build up others and by extension, build up your own business?

How do you know what is right for your situation and budget needs?

• All work from home opportunities come with risk, some more than others.
• To some degree all work from home opportunities have start up costs and require extra time devoted to the building of its foundation.
• Some things require skill immediately and others require just a passion to begin. All will require effort and attention to grow and sustain.
• It is important to sit down with your spouse and discuss the following:
  • What job will work best for your personality and skill set?
  • What job do you see as being something you can potentially stick with and continue building long term?
  • Are there any budget concerns that need to be addressed when it pertains to start up costs with one vs. another?
  • What is the end goal of your pursuing this? Is this meant to be a hobby or a legitimate income source? How much are you expected to bring in per month and what is the expectation for hours worked?

Choosing to work from home can be very satisfying on many levels. For my personality, I need something that feels like mine separate from homemaking and homeschooling. I pour my creative energy into what I do and it is therapeutic. It also fulfills a need for us financially and that is important too.

Meet Lindsey

Lindsey is a stay at home, work from home mom to six children ten years and younger. She homeschools and enjoys large family living. When Lindsey is not changing diapers, cleaning house and cooking meals, she enjoys binge-watching shows on Netflix with her husband … because let’s get real, who has energy after 8PM when you have this many kids?

As her husband would say, Lindsey is a chronic hobbyist. Despite the fact that my husband and I had our own anxieties as children and adults, it was startling for us to realize that we had four bright, gifted children who were struggling to cope with their own as well. Helping our children navigate anxiety and anxious thoughts felt quite different from managing our own.

We were filled with so much confusion, doubt, worry, and a fear that we were failing our kids and letting them free fall. We desperately wanted to be able to help them cope and lead healthy lives but we didn’t know where to start. Traditional parenting books and tips just weren’t helpful. 

Determined to help, we began searching online, reading books on childhood anxieties, seeking professional help, and talking with teachers and other parents. As we dug deeper, we discovered ways to help our children navigate their own path through a variety of situations. We made it through with a sense of strength, perseverance, and confidence. We even started a local support group for other parents in the same situation.

Today, our children are thriving, happy, and learning to face, share, and manage their own anxieties.

Hi! I’m LaToya, a certified Christian Life Coach and mentor. I am a recovering perfectionist and control freak who loves old movies, good books, and strawberry Häagen-Dazs® ice cream.  A few years ago I traded in a law degree to stay home and homeschool my boys and I never looked back!

When my first marriage fell apart and I found myself a single mom with two kids trying to be mom, student, and take care of the house I was beyond overwhelmed.

Fast-forward a few years and I was facing the biggest trial of my life.  I was healing from an abusive marriage, my children were dealing with PTSD, and I was struggling to keep my faith in God. I had stopped dreaming and hoping for the future.

One day I found the strength to get up and start moving forward. I started praying, fasting, and studying my Bible like never before. I was able to dream again and live a life full of passion and purpose.  I started enjoying my children and my work.In short, I started living again. And I have only grown stronger and found more peace every single day.

Through trials of divorce, depression, death, and abuse I have learned how to find joy and God’s purpose and plan in broken circumstances. Those hard times were when I grew the most spiritually. I faced my fears and found a strength I never knew that I had. It is my hope that through this blog I can encourage and equip you to do the same.

Faithfulness + Endurance Through Life’s Biggest Hurts

George Mueller is known for saying, ‘To learn strong faith is to endure great trials. I have learned my faith by standing firm amid severe testings.”

Just like George Mueller and some of the other people I’ll be talking about, I too have learned my faith and learned to endure through my life’s biggest hurt.

If you’re a homeschooling mom like myself, you read the story of George Mueller and how his faith helped him to feed and house thousands of orphans. I just love hearing stories about how other people have used faith to survive. We actually read through the Christian Heroes Then And Now book, about George Mueller, while I was going through my divorce trial. It opened my eyes to the fact that…

God uses life’s hardest times to bring His sons and daughters to a place where their only hope is found in their faith in Him.

 I was one of those people who said, it won’t happen to me… it won’t happen to us. We’ll never divorce… I’m “married for life.” We can’t control the actions and choices of other people, our husbands, our family or our friends… so sometimes we get hurt. Sometimes we have to deal with suffering. I’ve never been sold into slavery but I was told to get out of my mother’s home at the young age of 16, with nowhere to go. I’ve never been to jail. But I’ve been confined to a hospital bed, pregnant, struggling to survive while people I considered family pretended I didn’t exist.

Betrayal. Treachery. Pain. Humiliation. Falsely accused. Unjust punishment and suffering. Feeling alone and forgotten.

Anyone else experience these hurts before? I think we’d all agree that these are the biggest. And they can prove to be the biggest threat to our faith as well.

It’s even more painful when we experience these things, from family, or from someone who vowed to love, honor, and cherish you for life.

These are the very feelings Genesis Joseph felt as he faced trials that were inflicted on him because of the choices of others. Sin causes problems. And usually innocent victims feel the brunt of the pain of someone else’s sinful heart. And we don’t always get what we expect out of life. Those biggest hurts… tend to disrupt our life’s focus.

I know I expected to get married and then stay that way until I died. I expected my husband to stay faithful only to me. After that I expected him to repent of his behaviors, get help and spiritual guidance, and then stop the sin. But that’s not what happened. I was betrayed and then served divorce papers… and told I was the one forsaking.

Someone walked out and then God walked in.

He said, never will I leave you. Never will I forsake you. (Hebrew 13:5)

Joseph learned to depend on God for everything. So have I. Our Father took very good care of us discarded people. Providence was there the whole time. I had no idea how I was going to get through this but I knew where to look for guidance. I spent a lot of time reading God’s Word. I felt so much like Joseph. I felt betrayed. I was being blamed and feeling humiliated.

Even in my pain and anger at God, because of my situation, I knew there was more to my situation. I knew my faith was being tested. I remembered verses about growing my faith. But my eyes would look at my circumstances and I was afraid and felt alone. When the promises were easy to forget I would write them on my bathroom mirror and on my forearm… just trying to keep my faith.

And I’m here to share I’ve made it through… and to encourage you too with my story.

Through my life’s biggest trial, struggles and pain, I’ve learned these three things about faithfulness and endurance.

#1 : God is always with us – guiding, comforting, and protecting us

#2: We grow in faith as we endure

#3: God has a purpose for pain – a divine destiny

Our response to life’s biggest hurts? Faithfulness and endurance. To recap we do this by remembering that God is always with us, growing in our faith as we endure, and looking out for the purpose for our pain and suffering.

If that’s you right now, I want to encourage you! You can and will get through this too. God is with you! Slow and steady wins the race… we just have to keep pushing forward.

Dealing with Mom Guilt with Felice Gerwitz  

Overcoming Mommy Guilt (Scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN to get to the player)

We’ve all done it – you know thinking we are not good enough or it is all our fault. Where did I go wrong – what could I have done differently –

When I was expecting my first child I thought – how can it be that hard? I was a teacher and handled an entire classroom of kids, one little kid can’t be difficult after that!

I was filled with my own self importance, my own skill set – my own…well, degree! I had an education degree in Early Childhood, Elementary Ed and Specific Learning Disabilities – I was degreed for K-12 I was all set, right?

Wrong!

Along came Neal, this beautiful bundle of joy – and he was the first and most perfect baby. He slept well and for hours, he barely cried, he nursed really well. In fact, I thought he was the easiest child ever! And, compared to my other four he was a very easy baby…

But fast forward and let me tell you I began to second guess every decision  because the experts began to weigh in.

Well meaning family members, friends, the lady next door – everyone was an expert!

I began listening to my friends talk about their kids and their parenting methods were all over the board from the way permissive to the super, super strict—train up a child and that is the way he will grow crowd and don’t spare the rod crowd.

While I was very comfortably somewhere in between I began to realize that moms in general were a mess –

They were threading water – barely surviving.

I listened to people share:

1. I’m not good enough
2. I’m going to ruin my children
3. I’m not an expert
4. My kids are going to grow up to hate me which is why I am going to be sure to spoil them
5. It is all my fault!

Friends – if you hear nothing else I say …please hear this. IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT – Let me repeat that – IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT.

As a Christian we have the tools to be super parents

– after all as Christians aren’t we heirs of the KINGDOM isn’t GOD OUR FATHER? Didn’t God promise not to forsake us but to send HIS spirit to guide us?

I understand you are on overload – I understand your child may be lost – and you know what? God has given us and them free will…

We can not mold our children in our image – however we can introduce them to the Almighty God

And we often preach to the choir – we ask our children to do the heavy lifting – to demonstrate to us God’s love and to show us they really understand.

We can see their walk with the Lord in the fruit they demonstrate

And if we don’t like that fruit – guess what? It is up to us to pray. And we pray – God do this and this and this – NO – we need to pray YOUR WILL LORD NOT MINE

God did not give us a spirit of fear New International Version 2Timothy 1:7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or …

Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will neverleave you nor forsake you. …. and hope; unto us is this gospel preached, as well as unto them; he will never fail thee, nor forsake thee, Heb 13:5.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
…17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and He will be in you. 18I will not leave you as orphans;I will come to you. 19In a little while, the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you also will live.…

Do Not Worry (Luke 12:22-34) 25 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns—and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his lifespan? 28And why do you worry about clothes? Consider how the lilies of the field grow: They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?31Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the pagans pursue all these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.

Moms – stop with the guilt!

1. If you feel guilty it is not from God – He does not give us a sense of guilt.
2. Feeling guilty is a sign that we lack faith – in ourselves and the power of God – think about that. It hurts doesn’t it? When I realized this myself … I had to pray and repent.
3. Guilt is often misplaced. The guilty person – i.e. your child, gets off scott free – “It is not my fault”
4. It’s not about you – it is about the offending party

It is not your fault. It really isn’t

Let me tell you a true story. I was praying to the Lord about a situation that was really outside of my control. I was apologizing to Him for something I felt was really a lack of  faith. Then I felt the Lord answer my prayer with clarity – but the answer was very compelling, the Lord basically said, “Do you really think you have that much power?”

Wow. Just wow!

Sometimes friends we take on the burden of fault when it does not lie on our shoulders. We allow our child – in point 3 above to get off with a “free” card.

We are not responsible for someone eles’s free will decision – sometimes our children need to fall in order for the Lord to minister to them where they are – even if it feels like the entire world is falling in around  your shoulders.

We fix everything from the time they are little to the time they are big – and when we can’t we get overwhelmed. We just can’t do it anymore!

Solutions:

1. Look at Mary – her infamous example as the mother of our Lord. At the wedding feast of Canaan where her wise words were, “Do what He tells you.” These words are applicable for us as well.
2. Praise God in everything – yes, everything. Remember Romans 8:28
3. Pray specifically, and if we don’t know how to pray ask the Lord. (Podcast: AFewMinutesWithGodPodcast.com
4. Know that God hears you! He really does.

Keeping your head above the water when YOU are the one with special needs!

5 Aspects of Life to balance

Years ago I was supermom. Okay so maybe just marginally awesome mom. I was the head of my growing church’s nursery. Went to co-op with my 5 kids who were all dealing with special needs. We were in the van most days of the week zipping here and there doing all sorts of thing… busy things… things that I filled my time with.

We lived an intense life but I never really considered what if… what if I became the one with special needs? I had medical issues but they were stable at the time and part of me just thought I’ll be like this, sick but able bodied.

That is not what happened.

1. Create a Plan and set of Goals to reach for-

   1. How often do you hear oh we homeschool so you can just take a day off…
      1. 1 day, 2, a week when does it become too much?
   2. Goals help you establish a baseline
      1. Am I pushing too hard?
      2. Are we on track? Even if it doesn’t feel like we are

2. Structure and Routine

   1. My natural inclination is relaxed homeschooling but my situation requires
   2. We developed a routine for the family because we are a truly a special needs family
      1. If the kids are upset and out of sorts my efforts will be 10x just to get a calm less intense result

3. Year round Homeschooling

   1. This is not the only way to do it just how we do.
      1. Flexible time
      2. Consistent learning that doesn’t require review in the fall
      3. Anxiety that a normal child can have with mom or dad in and out of the hospital is eased by a constant

4. Homemaking takes time and spoons!

   1. Menu planning saves $, time, and energy
      1. Brain fog at the end of the day
      2. I need a rest.

5. Healthy Living

   1. Go to the dr, dentist, therapist, chiropractor
      1. Shows your children to care for and tend to their own bodies
   2. Sleep!
   3. Take your medications if necessary
   4. Rest is good.. I know opposite of how we started but being able to acknowledge that we all need a rest is good. Take an In-service day.

It’s not always easy to get from struggling or just plain not making our goals and feeling depressed about our own performance as mom, wife, and homeschooler to functioning, progressing, calmer person. Like in a real pond there are those stones on the edge that are slime covered and you may fall. Get back up and keep trying.

I wake up each and every day because the Lord has blessed me with the strength to carry on. I acknowledge and welcome that comforting fact.

True and authentic womanhood is a gift from the Almighty God – something that NO one can take away from YOU – because YOU have been entrusted with a very special gift – and now I want to share that gift.

1. True womanhood is closely connected to love, it gives life it is balance
2. True womanhood remembers the gift of our feminine genius – this is the charism that the Holy Spirit gives to women.
3. True womanhood understands we have our dignity.
4. True womanhood isn’t an either or – it isn’t a revolution it is a gift given to us as good by our very nature, the fabric of our womanhood. Gen 1:28 “Fill the earth and subdue it” [Given to both men and women.]
5. True womanhood is realizing by our very nature, we are the only ones who are called daughter – mother – wife – no other. We are gifted with intuition, sensitivity generosity, and self-giving. We are gifted with loyalty… women are fiercely loyal.
6. True and authentic womanhood is knowing who you are despite being marginalized by society or the circumstances in your life.
7. True and authentic womanhood gains its strength from an infilling of the Holy Spirit.
8. True womanhood is the courage to take this gift we’ve been given and pass it on as a legacy to our children.
9. True womanhood is the gift of being an equal partner (not better or worse than) our male counterpart. Genesis 2:20 “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him” [The help is not one-sided but mutual—womanhood expresses the “human” as much as manhood does but in a different way.]
10. True womanhood remembers the greatest example in history and that is the mother of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and that is Mary. She exemplifies all that is good and holy in motherhood.

Show Notes: One Choice That Can Improve Any Relationship –

• There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus –  but we are exposed to the temptation and darkness.
• What we think about God is the most important thing about us.
• God is delighted in us – we lift these things up in our minds to defend ourselves against the enemy.
• God is delighted in others – such as our spouse
• We believe that God delights in others –  we should practice this
• We can become stabilized in this truth, how God delights in YOU it will change our lives!
• If you are sure that God loves you – that confidence, it will bless you each day
• You love for your spouse is your reflection of God’s love

In the podcast, Amy shares her personal story of living with Ideopathic Tracheal Stenosis and how God has shaped her homeschool and her family over the last nine years through this disease. She also shares ways she has found to overcome the obstacles to homeschooling successfully inspite of this disease or any other crisis in your life. If you are facing obstacles in homeschooling or worry that what you are doing is not good enough, you will be blessed by this presentation.

Amy has a chronic illness with no cure, however she is joyful and in this presentation you will be blessed to learn how she copes with this situation and works around it so she can continue to homeschool.

This ebook is a collection of 15 chapters written by homeschool Moms who have struggled with life’s challenges to homeschool successfully and each Mom shares heart-to-heart about her struggles and how she overcame. Sandra is a regular contributor of articles and photographs in various publications, but she is currently giving top priority to her manuscript on Naomi.

When Saying No is Really Saying Yes to Your Family

What is a Biblical Worldview? How does our worldview affect the quality of our lives? How does it shape our words, our actions and choices? Armed with a Biblical Worldview, our children will be more equipped to walk with the Lord as adults. We don’t have to be perfect parents or super spiritual to impart a Biblical worldview; we only need be aware and purposeful and often humble. In this talk, Jeannie will explore these issues and give specific ideas for giving your children an eternal perspective and a strong Biblical Worldview, so that they will be ready to face the world.

Jeannie Fulbright is a homeschooling mother of four and the author of Apologia’s Young Explorer series: Exploring Creation. Those titles include Astronomy, Botany, Zoology 1, 2 and 3, Anatomy and Physiology, and the new Chemistry and Physics for elementary through middle school students.

At the age of ten, Jeannie wrote her first book, and later continued her writing journey at the University of Texas. There, she wrote for the newspaper and spent evenings as a primetime newscaster for the student radio station. After graduating from UT-Austin, she married her husband, Jeff, who is an attorney. They live in Metro Atlanta with three of their four children.

Jeannie’s children range in age from 13 to 20. Her oldest graduated from homeschooling in 2011 and was accepted on scholarship to the University of Georgia where she is on the Dean’s List.

It’s her love for God’s Word, her family, homeschooling, and other believers that inspires her to continue writing and speaking. She has a heart to encourage homeschoolers everywhere. Not only does Jeannie continue to create curriculum, she also writes a monthly newsletter, a weekly blog and is very active on social media.
