Travers Smith has become the latest firm to cut jobs - laying off five associate from its real estate and corporate practices. In addition to the five redundancies, the firm is also consulting on a number of positions within its residential conveyancing team.Travers confirmed the cuts today (3 December) - joining a long line of practices forced to make redundancies as a result of the market downturn.

Travers Smith has boosted its ties with the Bank of England (BoE) after agreeing to second corporate partner Anthony Foster to the institution. Foster, who was promoted to the partnership this year, joined the bank recently for a short-term secondment.The placement, likely to be for around six months, is thought to be to help the bank out with the current turmoil.The City firm has regularly advised the bank in the past but only on the employment side and it currently has an associate from the group seconded to the client as part of a regular placement programme.

Travers boosts partner benefits with sabbatical scheme revamp

Travers Smith has revamped its sabbatical policy, significantly boosting the amount of leave its partners can take. The City firm has increased the amount of paid leave partners can take to 17 weeks, with lawyers permitted to take up to four separate breaks throughout their career.Lawyers will be eligible for the full amount of leave after holding partnership for at least eight years, with the scheme open to all partners, including non-equity. Previously, the sabbatical benefits were only available to partners with at least 10 years' service, and covered up to 13 weeks leave.

For a crude barometer of market activity, you can do worse than Travers Smith. Naturally aligned to UK corporate M&A, the City firm's profitability is closely tied to activity in upper-mid market private equity and the Alternative Investment Market (AIM). Small wonder, then, that year-end results announced by Travers earlier this month have shown growth suffer at the hands of prolonged credit turmoil and tumbling business confidence. Although still a highly profitable outfit - profits per equity partner comfortably outstrips many rivals with a similar income - the firm has nonetheless reported a 7.6% drop in profits to £755,000, down from £817,000 last year. Turnover, meanwhile, has edged up 3% to sit at £81m for the year.

Charge-out rates will continue to rise despite economic downturn

More than three-quarters of senior lawyers believe charge-out rates at leading commercial law firms will rise over the next 12 months, despite growing pressure from clients to cut back on fee increases because of uncertain market conditions.Results of the latest Legal Week Big Question survey found that just under a fifth of partners (19%) believe clients should brace themselves for above-inflation rises.

Trainee retention rates across the UK's elite legal profession have remained steadfast, with many firms keeping hold of more than 90% of their intake despite a sharp dip in City lawyers' overall business confidence. Travers Smith has snared New Britain Palm Oil (NBPO) as a client after advising on the company's £362.5m admission to the London Stock Exchange. Travers corporate finance partner Alasdair Steele led the team advising NBPO, which is based in Papua New Guinea, on the initial public offering (IPO) - its first role for the client. Also advising for the top 40 UK law firm were tax partner Simon Yates and corporate finance assistant James Middleton.

Macfarlanes has landed its latest major role for 3i, advising the private equity group on its sale of specialist healthcare company Care Principles to Three Delta.Macfarlanes is advising 3i on the transaction, which values Care Principles at £270m.The role despite a run of instructions from the client for fellow panel member firm and rival City law firm Travers Smith.However, Travers has also picked up a role on the deal, with corporate head Chris Hale acting for the Care Principles management team.Three Delta was advised by Herbert Smith. The sale comes after 3i took at 38% stake in Care Principles in 1997, worth £1.5m. The UK-based private equity group subsequently backed a management buy-out of the company in 2005.Care Prinicples provides rehabilitation for adults requiring long-term therapy and treatment for learning disabilities and mental health problems. The majority of the patients are sectioned. The company now has over 380 occupied beds and employs 1,500 staff.Travers and Clifford Chance also act regularlry for 3i, with Travers having recently advised the group on its £993m bid for estate agency Countrywide as well as the high-profile £790m sale of National Car Parks (NCP). Macfarlanes had previously advised 3i on the 2005 buyout of NCP. Herbert Smith has historically shared work for Three Delta with New York giant Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, with both firms acting on the company's £1.4bn investment in health group Four Seasons Healthcare in 2006.

Travers tops £800k PEP with 15% growth spurt

Travers Smith has posted a solid set of results for the past financial year, with preliminary figures putting the firm above the £800,000 profits per equity partner (PEP) point for the first time. Partner profits, turnover and total profits at the bellwether City law firm are all up by 15%, with PEP up from £705,000 to £810,000. Fee income climbed from £68.1m last year to a new mark of £78.3m, while total profits jumped from £33m to £38.1m.
