However, when I can find a few minutes to spare, I do like to surprise my family with a special sweet treat now and again… like this simple banana cake recipe.

This easy banana cake recipe is the perfect lightweight spring or summer dessert option. It goes perfectly with freshly brewed coffee and is made even better by the addition of the easy caramel icing recipe included in this article.

This crumb-licking-good, moist banana cake recipe is a great option for the busy chef. The most complicated thing about it is “making” sour milk (combining milk and vinegar). Plus, this simple banana cake recipe is a great way to use up those bananas you keep forgetting about… yeah, those really ripe ones nearly hidden behind the coffeemaker.

If you aren’t sure how to make banana cake, no worries. It really isn’t that hard. Even the easy caramel icing recipe can be tackled in just a few minutes.

Though I’ve never used frozen bananas, I would imagine they would be just as delicious in this recipe. Make sure you thaw the bananas at room temperature and drain any liquid. Then follow the recipe as listed below. 

BANANA CAKE INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup shortening
1/4 softened butter
1 1/4 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all purpose flour, sifted
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup sour milk*
2 ripe bananas

*Sour milk – mix 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Let stand 10-15 minutes.

CARAMEL ICING INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup butter
1 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup milk
2 cups powdered sugar

SIMPLE BANANA CAKE RECIPE DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350° and grease a 9 x 13 baking pan with butter.

2. In a large mixing bowl, beat together butter and shortening until creamy.

3. Mix in sugar and eggs.

4. Mix in flour, baking powder, and baking soda.

5. Mix in sour milk and vanilla extract.
Note: You make sour milk for this simple banana cake recipe by combining one cup of milk with one tablespoon vinegar. Allow the mixture to stand for 10-15 minutes before using in this recipe.

6. Mix in ripe bananas.

7. Pour cake batter into the baking pan

8. Bake for 25-30 minutes

9. Remove and let cool.

Before you know it, swimsuit season will be here. Try not to panic.

Let me guess, you eat pretty healthy and you work out on a regular basis, but you still have “problem” areas. Areas that are all too evident in a swimsuit. How did I know? Who doesn’t have those problem areas?

Okay, I can think of a few celebrities, but I bet they didn’t do it alone… and you don’t have to either. I want to help by sharing some of my tricks and tips for getting fit without breaking the bank, specifically my homemade lose weight body wrap.

The goal isn’t for you to be rockin’ an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polkadot bikini (although if you can, good for you!), but for you to be comfortable during the summer. No, you don’t have to go out and join an expensive and intimidating gym or pay hundreds of dollars for body wraps to lose weight, equipment, special food, etc.

You can get in shape and become a healthier person in the comfort of your own home using things like these DIY lose weight body wraps.

Spot Patterns
When you start the journey to being healthier, it is important to keep in mind that visible and lasting changes won’t happen over night. In fact, I highly recommend using a weight loss chart to track your progress so you’ll be able to spot any success, no matter how small. A food journal may also come in handy so you can look for patterns in your eating habits. For example, you may find you tend to go a little crazy in the evening or can’t resist a 3 o’clock snack. Spotting your habits, good and bad, can allow you to make changes where needed.

Take Advantage of Freebies
If you’re concerned about your budget, be sure to check out fitness blogs, Pinterest, and other sites for free workout plans and free weight loss programs. There are plenty of people out there willing to share what worked for them… and hopefully those tactics will also work for you. In addition to exercise regimes, there are also plenty of free healthy recipes out there. Here are 25 healthy lunch recipes to show you just how tasty healthy can be!

Avoid Convenience and Trends
Pre-prepared foods shipped to you are definitely convenient, but they’re also costly. Save your money and make your own meals. Take advantage of the Internet’s plethora of free recipes and all that your grocery store has to offer. Clean eating on your own can be a challenge, but there are plenty of tips out there to help you get started. 

Another thing to watch out for when trying to improve your health and fitness level is trends. For example, it is very trendy to go have a lose weight body wrap done at a spa, and while there is nothing inherently wrong with doing so, it can be a real strain on any budget. Many professional wraps cost over $100! Another trend that can drain your wallet is juice cleanses. Buying pre-prepared juices racks up a bill fast! Instead, if there’s a trend you want to participate in, whether it is body wraps for weight loss, or juice cleanses, look for ways to do them at home. 

Are Wraps Good for Weight Loss?

Try DIY
As I’ve said (again and again), DIY can save you money. For example, you can save approximately $100 just by making a lose weight body wrap at home (versus going to a spa). The directions for this homemade lose weight body wrap are below, but before we dive right in, a few notes.

These lose weight body wraps work by making you sweat. They are not a diet and exercise plan. You should not use them constantly as they may cause dehydration and other health problems. Lose weight body wraps are meant more as a temporary spot treatment. They can help you get rid of water weight in a hurry. However, without proper diet and exercise, the lose weight body wraps will not produce meaningful, long lasting results.

As mentioned above, this DIY lose weight body wrap works by making you sweat, so it is important to monitor your hydration level during and after a wrap. You should also be aware of your body. If you’re feeling overheated and ill, remove the lose weight body wrap immediately!

Lastly, lose weight body wraps are not for children. They should not be used if you are pregnant, taking medications that can make you feel hot, or breastfeeding. If you have a health condition, consult with a doctor before using the DIY lose weight body wrap.

Well, now that I’ve scared you :), let’s whip up a cleansing juice drink and wrap ourselves up like a mummy with the lose weight body wrap!

MATERIALS

Any lotion
Plastic wrap
Bandage wrap

DIRECTIONS

1. Rub a thick layer of lotion on your stomach and sides.

2. Wrap plastic wrap around your middle section.
Tip: You want it to be snug but not tight.

3. Wrap the bandage around your middle section over the plastic wrap and secure it.

4. Wear a shirt over top to help keep everything in place.

5. Relax.

6. After an hour or so remove the lose weight body wrap, rub in any remaining lotion, and check out your results.

What to Bring on a Cruise

This Caribbean cruise packing list can help you avoid those panicked moments where you realize you forgot Susie’s bathing suit or John’s flip flops. Those panicked moments are always followed by forking over a wad of cash…especially when you’re confined to a cruise ship. By using our printable cruise packing list, you’ll get helpful reminders of what to wear on a cruise.

Print out a Caribbean cruise checklist for each member of your family. Obviously, some items on the list will be redundant (ex. you don’t need two hairdryers) so designate one packing list as the “master packing list” and on the others cross out the redundant items.

Caribbean Cruise Packing List: Clothes, Shoes, and Accessories

Keep in mind that just because you’re on a tropical cruise doesn’t mean you can just pack a bathing suit and flip flops. There may be chilly weather at night so be sure to bring long pants (like jeans) and a light jacket. In addition, many cruises have a fancy dinner called the “Captain’s Dinner” so you may want to bring a nice dress, dress shirt, slacks, etc.

If you’re worried about space, try to bring the basics (such as plain shirts and tank tops) and dress them up (or down) with accessories.

Caribbean Cruise Packing List: For the Baby

If you’re bringing a baby along on your Caribbean cruise, be sure to check your cruise packing list at least twice. Once you’re on the boat it may be difficult (or at least very expensive) to obtain the items you forgot, and unfortunately, with a baby simply going without often isn’t an option. When in doubt, bring extra! Especially when it comes to baby food or baby formula, diapers, and teething ointment.

Caribbean Cruise Packing List: Miscellaneous

Those miscellaneous items can add up fast! Before diving into packing, take a few minutes to review your cruise checklist to see if there are items you can cut out. For example, instead of taking an alarm clock use your cell phone or instead of bringing a bunch of books use a Kindle or eBook reader. You can also contact the cruise line to see if they offer some of the items on-board such as a travel iron or steamer.

Caribbean Cruise Packing List: Toiletries

When it comes to toiletries, the number of products you and your family need can get out of hand pretty quickly. Luckily, many toiletries come in a travel size including:

• Conditioner
• Deodorant
• Face Cleanser
• Hairstyling Products (ex. Hairspray)
• Shampoo
• Shaving Cream
• Shower Gel or Body Wash
• Toothpaste

If you’re on a tight budget (or just want to save money), contact the companies who make your toiletries and ask for a “sample”.

Caribbean Cruise Packing List: Carry On

Often times you will take a plane to get to the port your cruise ship will leave from. If that is the case for you and your family, some items really should be placed in your carry-on bag rather than checked. As a rule of thumb, anything valuable should be in your carry-on including:

• Camera
• Cash, Credit Cards, ATM Card, and Traveler’s Checks
• Cell Phone (and Charger)
• iPod (and Charger)
• Laptop (and Charger)
• Tablet or eBook Reader (and Charger)
• Video Camera
• Prescription Medications

In addition, you’ll want to pack a change of clothes, your ID and passport, and anything that will make your flight more comfortable (ex. a snack, travel blanket, or travel games).

Luckily, most airlines allow you to take two carry on bags at no charge (one that fits in the overhead bin and one that fits under the seat in front of you).

Caribbean Cruise Packing Checklist: Before You Sail Away

In addition to determining what to pack for a cruise, there are some things you’ll need to square away at home before heading off on your Caribbean adventure. Don’t forget to:

• Arrange for pet care
• Check the weather/temperature of your destination
• Give your neighbor your house keys
• Put your house lights on a timer
• Stop your mail
• Turn your electronics and lights off (including unplugging unnecessary appliances)
• Turn the thermostat down
• Turn the water heater thermostat down
• Let the police know you’re going to be out of town – many times they’ll do an extra drive by of your house while you’re gone

According to Today, parents spend just over $100 per child per year on school supplies, and that doesn’t include clothes, shoes, or electronics. Add in those items, and parents can expect to spend an average of $669 per child. Yikes!

If you have more than one child, the cost adds up fast. It’s sure to leave you wondering “where to get free school supplies?” Well, wonder now more. Here are 10 ways to snag free school supplies!

How to Get Free School Supplies Online 

When it comes to how to get free school supplies and clothes, one of the easiest options, in my opinion, is to look online. Seriously, the Internet is an awesome resource for getting all kinds of freebies including free school supplies by mail 2026 and 2027.

In this article, I’ll be sharing just a few of my favorite ways to get free school supplies online, but don’t limit yourself to these options. I promise, there are many, many more ways to save with the power of the Internet. Just open up Google and do searches for things like “free school supplies by mail 2026” or “where can I get free school supplies,” and you’ll get a plethora of results to explore.  

#1 – Online Groups

Joining local or non-local groups through sites like Facebook can be a great way to find free bulk school supplies.

Tip: Look for groups oriented toward frugal living, parenting, or bartering.

Craigslist may also be a good answer to the question of how to get free school supplies and clothes. The site has a section for free items located under the “For Sale” category. 

#2 – Ask Brands

Ask and ye shall receive… free school supplies by mail 2026 and 2027. Okay, the saying doesn’t end that way but still, my advice is to ask. You’ll be surprised at how often companies are willing to provide free promo products, samples, and coupons. Here’s what you do:

1. Make a list of the school supplies you need.
2. Find companies that make or sell those products (ex. Crayola).
3. Find their social media channels such as Facebook.
4. Contact them and ask about getting free school supplies samples or coupons.

Remember, the worst they can say is no!

Tip: Follow these brands or stores on social media to be the first to know about giveaways, sales, coupons, and other ways to save money.

#3 – Freecycle.com

Freecycle.com is an interesting way to get free school supplies online. It’s essentially a HUGE swap-meet. In addition to snagging some free school supplies by mail, you may also be able to get rid of that junk taking up space in your garage and basement.

Your favorite frugal living sites (hint: freebiefindingmom.com) are great resources to answer questions like “how to get free school supplies and clothes” and “who is giving out free school supplies?”

Tip: Don’t have a Kindle? No worries, you can read Kindle books on just about any device, including your regular old computer using Kindle’s cloud reader.

How to Get Free School Supplies Offline 

Other than the Internet, there are plenty of ways to find free school supplies by mail or via other means. Here are some options to investigate.

#6 – At School

Believe it or not, your child’s school may be an excellent source for free school supplies. Contact the administration at the school, explain what you need (what specific products), and ask if they can help. The school itself may not be able to give you free school supplies but they can likely direct you to local or national organizations that can tell you how to apply for free school supplies.

#7 – Local News Affiliates

Check your local newspaper or local news organization websites to find opportunities to get free school supplies by mail or otherwise. Local news affiliates will inform you about upcoming sales, community events, and fundraisers all aimed at providing kids with back-to-school goodies.

#8 – Charitable Organizations

If you are facing economic hardship and wondering where can I get free school supplies, charitable organizations might be your answer. There are many, many charities out there that may be able to help ensure your little one heads back to school on the right foot, but here are a few you should definitely check out.

Salvation Army
While the Salvation Army has locations all across the United States, their organization is relatively decentralized. This means that you will need to contact your local Salvation Army to get information on getting free school supplies.

Boys & Girls Club of America
Partners, including Michael’s and Staples, donate products to local Boys & Girls Clubs so this organization can be a fantastic source for free school supplies by mail 2026 and 2027. Like Salvation Army, they’re decentralized (not all clubs have the same supplies), so contact your nearest location to get info.

Kids in Need Foundation
This national organization strives to provide free school supplies to kids all across the country. In addition, Kids in Need Foundation provides grants to teachers for necessary classroom supplies.

#9 – Community Organizations or Events

Another way to snag free school supplies is through community organizations. For example, in some towns the Chamber of Commerce will do fundraisers and school supply drives.

Look for flyers in local shops, restaurants, and other buildings such as churches. Check the city’s website as well as the public library website for information on events that may help you figure out how to get free school supplies and clothes.

#10 – Rebates

Rebates are still an excellent way to get free school supplies by mail 2026 and 2027. Many office supply stores offer great rebate deals on school supplies during the summer months. For instance, the Staples Easy Rebates program is a great way to get free school supplies. Sure you have to pay now, but in the long run, those school supplies will be free!

There you have it, 10 ways to get free school supplies. One final tip, it’s probably unreasonable to think you can get all of your kids school supplies for free. However, one way to save big on school supplies is to buy them after school starts and save them for next year. Here’s what you do:

1. Ask the school for the back-to-school shopping list for the grade ahead of your child’s. Example: If your child is in 3rd grade, you’d ask to get the 3rd grade shopping list and the 4th grade shopping list.
2. After school starts (typically in mid September), head to your local office supply stores including places like Walmart and Staples, and look for deeply discounted school supplies that are on the 4th grade shopping list.
3. Store these away till next year.

These 12 free heart templates (different sizes available!) have a lot of possible uses. With just a little creativity, you can use them not only to brighten your day but someone else’s as well! Below are just a few of the ways you could use a heart cut out template, but of course, don’t be afraid to think outside the box. (Or should I say outside the heart?)

Large Heart Template Printables

These white, pink, and red heart templates measure approximately 7.5 inches, so they are definitely large heart template printables.

Since each is (approximately) a 7 inch template, these large heart template printables will come in handy when you want to make a statement. For example, the white heart template PDF would make a great coloring sheet for your kids. They can decorate it with crayons, colored pencils, or washable markers and then give it to a loved one as a free printable Valentine card or just as an “I’m thinking of you” card.

Even though it’s already colored, the pink or red heart template could also be used in a kid’s craft project. (If you’re feeling brave, that is!)

Medium Heart Cut Out Templates

At just a smidge over 5 inches, these free heart templates are approximately 2.5 inches smaller than the large heart template printables above. If you’re looking for a 6 inch template, one of these three would be the closest option.

A medium heart shape template, like those above, is still large enough for kids to color; however, I think they’re a good size for decorating. For example, if you’re throwing a bridal shower, baby shower, or Valentine’s Day party, a medium heart template to print is a cute and budget-friendly décor option. You could hang these free printable heart templates, tape them to windows, or just sort of sprinkle them around (such as on table tops).

Of course, you can use heart templates different sizes (large, medium, small, or extra small) to give your decorations some variety. For example, string various sizes together to create an interesting banner or mobile.
