Ireland has fast become a kind of European Silicon Valley. But with that standing comes not only a high number of multinationals per capita, but also the stage for many data privacy battles.

The latest Big Tech company to set up shop in Dublin is OpenAI. In December 2023, the generative artificial intelligence provider changed the entity that provides its services to the European Economic Area to the Ireland-based “OpenAI Ireland Limited,” effectively naming its subsidiary the data controller for European users in its updated European privacy policy, which went into effect on Thursday.
