A Manhattan federal judge has ordered a criminal defendant to be vaccinated as a part of her bail package, saying the ”unusual” requirement was necessary to ensure the safety of the community upon her release from a federal jail.

U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff of the Southern District of New York said in a three-page order Tuesday that he had “ample authority” to require the woman, Elouisa Pimental, to receive at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine as a condition of her bail.
