BUY-A-CLIENT? - You’ve already spent the past year having your groceries and takeout orders dropped off at your front door—why not pay to have your clients delivered to you as well? Well, for one thing, experts say it’s unethical and potentially illegal. But, as Law.com’s Charles Toutant reports, that hasn’t stopped Florida-based Consumer Awareness Group from emailing attorneys promising to connect them with potential plaintiffs for a price. Zantac claimants, for instance, are priced at $700 each, while clergy sex abuse claimants cost $2,500 per name. Ethics lawyers told Toutant the emails appear to constitute a pretty clear no-no. But Consumer Awareness Group’s co-founder and managing partner Marcus Obser said the company, which as been in business since 2014, refers “potential claimants,” not “clients.” “We’re not a company that says, ‘Hey, I’m going to sell you X amount of clients.’ My understanding is there is quite a bit of drop-off” between the number of leads generated by the company and parties who file suits, Obser said.
