WHAT WE’RE WATCHING

WHO’S NEXT? - Your clients love you. They really do. But…they also want to know who’s taking over for you when you eventually pass on to a better place—like Sarasota, Florida (voted the #1 retirement destination by U.S. News and World Report!). As Law.com’s Christine Simmons writes in this week’s Law.com Barometer newsletter, clients care about their outside counsel’s succession plan—and they’re increasingly paying attention to whether that plan takes diversity into account. For example, as part of its new guidelines for outside counsel, Coke is requiring firms to identify two or more diverse lawyers, at least half of whom are Black attorneys, as candidates to succeed the relationship partner role with the company. As Simmons writes, succession planning takes time to do right, but that’s not an excuse to procrastinate: “With Coke and potentially other corporations now applying more pressure on client handoffs, it means firms have even more reason to start succession planning now.” To receive the Law.com Barometer directly to your inbox each week, click here.
