A federal judge in Washington, D.C., has ordered the Trump Justice Department to temporarily shut down an advisory commission on law enforcement, finding it violated federal law by only including law enforcement officials and no members with backgrounds in civil rights or criminal defense.

Senior U.S. District Judge John Bates of the District of Columbia made the ruling in a lawsuit filed by the NAACP’s Legal Defense and Educational Fund earlier this year, challenging the Presidential Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice over its failure to file a charter, for holding private proceedings and for lacking members with diverse perspectives.
