As news broke on Tuesday that the president of Brazil has tested positive for COVID-19 after months of dismissing the virus, lawyers lamented that the pandemic has been grossly mismanaged by leaders in Brazil and Mexico, the region’s two largest economies.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced that he had tested positive for the virus Tuesday, just days after he attended a Fourth of July celebration sans mask with the U.S. ambassador to Brazil, Todd Chapman. Bolsonaro said he got tested for the new coronavirus after feeling tired, with muscle aches and a fever.
