PIVOTING WITH A SENIOR PUP – CBD

By Wednesday, August 24, 2022 5 No tags Permalink

I have accepted the fact that I am now pivoting through life with a senior pup. I plan to adapt when necessary, swivel when required, and share what’s proven beneficial while living in Harley’s aging world #hisminiseries

WHEN MY PODCAST CO-HOST –

told me about an interview with Angela Ardolino of CBD Dog Health, timing couldn’t have been better.

Holistic treatments of all kinds (acupuncture, canine massages) are of interest to me if it will give Harley a non toxic, cleaner source of relief with what comes during this aging process – like joint inflammation.

Kimberly has been using CBD products for years with her pack, I have not! If her knowledge of its use, benefits, pros and cons on dogs is at a level ten – them my experience/knowledge level is at a negative eight. #nojoke

Let’s face it, when CBD products first blazed across the pet space, folks whispered about it. I know, because I was one of those “folks.”

Several years ago I wrote about life with two dogs and the Citadel‘s silly cannon traditions #yeahIsaidit…

Home of the giant monster cannon

Army cadets shoot this heavy piece of artillery during their home games. The stadium happens to be located across the street, and the noise catapults us into a Gettysburg reenactment!

The dogs are traumatized every-single-time!

After reading this particular post, a neighbor pet parent stopped by my house with a sandwich bag of homemade CDB dog treats. She handed me the bag and whispered –

give a little to the Boys before the games and it will really calm them down. But don’t give them a lot…

COLOR ME CBD –

crazy, but between my ignorance and her street corner drug dealing whisper, I was scared to death. I started to visualize my Doods staring at me all glassy eyed, and loopy after eating her treats. #kidyounot

Can’t you just see my idiot brain thinking they could get stoned?

As soon as she left the office, I threw the baggie in the trash #orangeisNOTmynewblack

While I am not proud of my cluelessness to the benefits of CBD usage with dogs, I also know I am not alone. And for that reason, I am completely comfortable confessing my lack of education.

Asking all my insane questions to Angela helped me understand the difference between the compounds in the cannabis as well as the lower levels of THZ used in creating the oils.

HERE’S WHAT I LEARNED –

  • It’s the full spectrum hemp extract compound from the plant that creates the therapeutic results
  • Products must be carefully formulated with all-natural ingredients to benefit every pet
  • They should be guaranteed for potency AND purity through third party lab testing
  • The hemp plants should be grown without the use of herbicides or pesticides
  • Proper products will provide a COA (certificate of analysis) for consumers to review

There are multiple Full Spectrum CBD oils and topical salves made from hemp with all natural ingredients to benefit your dog’s health.

Some –

  • target and reduce inflammation
  • manage anxiety
  • restore balance in your dogs body and mind

HERE’S WHERE WE’LL START –

I am purchasing a bottle of CBD oil called “Ease with Turmeric and Frankincense.” Angela highly recommends it for dogs with arthritis and/or muscle deterioration.

According to what I’ve read, CBD is also an excellent holistic source for combatting allergies. Interesting read about CBD vs. Apoquel, but not sure if it’s going to work in our amped up allergen region. I’ll keep you posted on that one. ..

There are suggested doses on each bottle and I like that it can be given in daily doses or can be used situationally.

For a deeper dive into this growing pet health alternative, take a break and listen to a three way discussion representing different levels of experience and knowledge about CBD Dog Health with Angela.

Hey there! So glad Harley is hanging on. My Lilly is hanging on too. She turned 14 in June. She is definitely slower moving and has some incontinence (thank heavens for diapers at night!) and it seems she can’t hear or see perfectly. Chester (3 yrs.) is a delight and full of silliness and I swear is keeping Lilly young. I haven’t tried CBD yet. She hasn’t shown a real need for anything for pain… yet. The vet did say to me “at this age, a month can be a year in aging.” Oh my old girl .. what is ahead for us? Hope you are well. Great to see you in blog land!! Have a great day! So glad Harley is living his best life especially by adding solutions CBD. I’ve been a big fan of CBD for helping control Elsa’s seizures after my vet recommended it (and not just because I live in Colorado where marijuana is plentiful and legal). I did lots of research, found a local organic grower and began administering his product. She has done so much better on it (it’s important about the CBD you’re using since there are no standards in the industry and sadly a lot of garbage in the marketplace). Hope Harley continues to do well. Oh, and I’ve added CBD to a homemade joint relief cream for achy joints and foot neuropathy for my arthritic relatives with remarkable success.

You have no idea how much your comment means to me! I am getting so excited at the possibilities CBD oil can do for his inflammation and allergies. I will definitely keep everyone posted. Take care and hugs to your pack.

I have to dig back into my memory bank to a time when Shadow was starting to feel the aches and pains of joint arthritis. I hated all the da*ned drugs, so I tried CBD chews – eh – and oils for a while. They seemed to help some but not as much as I had expected or hoped. It wasn’t until our vet and I decided to give her a stem cell infusion that I saw any real improvement; but as the effects started wearing off, she strained her one groin muscle and started her decline. And she was ready to be reunited with her sister and bestest friend, Callie. At that same time, I was trying CBD for Ducky for her anxieties. I gave up when I saw absolutely no results at all. The acupuncture treatments Ducky was getting those last few months of her life did much more for her than anything else other than the ACE Free Work I wrote about in my blog a couple of years ago.

I want to try the CBD to see if it will reduce the inflammation of the joints as well as give him some relief from the allergies and I can begin to wean him down a bit from the Apoquel. He’s been on it for years, and never showed any side effects from it But as he ages I would like to go as holistic as I can – so we will see. I will definitely keep you posted. Stay well my friend!
