NASDA: food and ag sectors need long-term solutions in covid-19 relief

The CEO of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture says food and agriculture sectors still have unmet needs from coronavirus-related disruptions.

Barb Glenn says NASDA is asking congressional leaders to consider long-term solutions and guard against uneven COVID-19 recovery when finalizing the next round of relief.

“What we want to see out of both the House and Senate is there work together to bolster the recovery of food and agriculture with additional funding,” she says.

The Senate Republican proposal would provide $20 billion in discretionary funding to support ag producers, but it doesn’t include more funding for food and nutrition programs or dedicated funding to state ag department.

“Who fills the gaps with respect to new programming for moving food to hungry safe, keeping workers safe, and expanding our food processing capability,” she says. “All of these programs are gaps that still exist.”

Glenn says the Senate republic plan must be reconciled with the plan previously released by House Democrats.
