U.S. Dairy Export Council highlights sustainability

The U.S Dairy Export Council is touting the sustainability benefits of the nation’s dairy industry to global food professionals this week.

Krysta Harden, Executive Vice President of Global Environmental Strategy for Dairy Management Inc. and Interim Chief Operating Officer at USDEC, points to a recent study published in the Journal of Animal Science.

“Producing a gallon of milk in the U.S. involved 30 percent less water, 21 percent less land, and a 19 percent smaller footprint just between ’07 and ’17.”

She says from feed to post-consumer waste, the dairy industry contributes only two percent of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.

The U.S. Dairy Stewardship Committee this spring pledged to become carbon neutral or better by 2030, optimize water usage, and improve water quality.

Harden made her comments during the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) annual expo webinar.
