Missouri State Vet warns of Vesicular Stomatitis case

The state veterinarian says Missouri has confirmed the first case of Vesicular Stomatitis – in a horse in southwest Missouri’s Newton County.

Missouri is the seventh state to confirm the virus this year.  The Missouri Department of Agriculture is urging horse owners to monitor their livestock closely and call their vet if symptoms occur.

All animals on the affected premises have to be quarantined for at least 14 days. The virus can infect both horses and cattle but is not fatal. Flies and midges can carry the virus.

Missouri is requiring an entry permit for hooved animals coming to Missouri from affected areas. The virus can sometimes infect sheep, goats and swine.

The virus has also been confirmed in Arizona, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas this year in both horses and cattle.
