You know that feeling when you miss a step in a dance and find yourself a little offbeat? For a few beats more, you feel off balance, trying to reclaim your rhythm and resume the routine. That’s how it feels when we lose an hour to spring ahead with daylight saving time.

If you’ve ever had that waking gasp as you look at the clock — or even been late to an event — because of that annual shift in time, you know what a difference an hour makes. When people lose even one hour of sleep, it can interrupt their natural 24-hour cycle, leaving them fatigued and affecting their attention, memory, and cognitive abilities — and, of course, their general well-being.

This year, rather than trying to turn back time (sorry, Cher), let’s reclaim that hour! Let’s #TakeTimeBack.

We’re encouraging companies to give their employees back that lost hour. Let them have one more hour of weekend. Start Monday a little later or move those first meetings back. Empower employees to choose how they use their hour so that it feels like an hour gained instead of an hour lost.

What can you do with an hour? Sleep. Walk. Hike. Swim. Bike. Practice archery. Call a friend. Read. Create art. Meditate. Bake cookies. Play a game with your loved ones. Or even get some focused work done. It’s about having choice and flexibility.

If I were gifted an hour, I would close my laptop and unroll my yoga mat.

At Citrix, we’re inviting employees to take back an hour on March 15, if they can. As our chief people officer, you might expect me to calculate that as more than 9,000 hours of lost productivity, but I see it as a 9,000-hour investment in employee experience. It’s giving employees the space to succeed.

To be candid, this isn’t a so-called “official” program at Citrix, because it doesn’t need to be. For us, like many of you, the idea of a traditional 9-to-5 day doesn’t apply to many of our knowledge workers anymore, and employees are already equipped to work in new ways — with flexibility in where, how, and when they work. For us, it helps that we have Citrix technology, enabling us to work more efficiently with fewer distractions, securely, from anywhere.

Daylight saving time, which this year changes clocks in most of North America on March 14 and in much of Europe on March 28, makes us extra aware of how much we value even an hour. We’re using this annual milestone to embrace our distaste for lost time and to find ways to take time back every week and every day. It’s a moment to remind us that any time we get a little offbeat, we can take time back, find our footing, and keep dancing.
