Saved from the Scrap Yard: A Grandfather’s CJ-5 Reborn
2026-03-25 17:43 UTC by Kaiser Willys

My wife’s grandfather bought this CJ-5 Jeep new in 1962. When her Grandfather passed away, it was eaten up by the Pennsylvania road salt and languished in the garage of her father for 20 years. After her father’s passing it was headed to the scrap yard until I said I wanted it so I could restore it to new condition. The floors were completely rotted out, but with floors purchased from Kaiser Willys Auto Supply, I replaced them from firewall to tailgate, along with many other new parts. Now it is a new 1962 CJ-5 again.

I did all the work myself. Sheet metal, mechanical, blast, and paint. I had never painted a car, but it was easy enough, and it came out really well. The Jeep also has a rear locker, 2 1/2 lift, front disc brakes, 17″ wheels, and Yokohama Geolander 31.5 x 10 tires, a Warn 8000 winch, and upgraded seats. Other than that, everything else is stock or reproduction stock. Everything works: turn signal, speedo, heater box, horn, lights.
