 Today's Gospel reading for the Fifth Sunday of Lent, the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, is one of the longest of the Church year. Yet it contains the shortest verse in the Bible, John 11:35. Just three words.
And Jesus wept.
There's so much power in this shortest of all Scripture verses. Jesus wept for his friend Lazarus, yet He knew what was about to happen - that He would raise him from the dead. It shows Jesus' love and humanity. It also makes me think about other things that would make Jesus weep. Like my many sins, the times when I turn my back on Him. The souls of those who have rejected Him. Today, let's reflect on those times where we may cause Jesus to weep, and to repent of those things.
Father, forgive us for the times when we may cause Jesus to weep. Create in us a clean heart. Amen.
