Fine chemicals with sustainability in mind
 Endura is pleased to announce the launch of Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) Prime, a milestone innovation introduced in celebration of the company’s 45th anniversary. PBO PRIME is a premium, high-grade synergist, it has the world’s lowest levels of the impurities dipiperonyl ether (DPE) and dipiperonyl methane (DPM), well below the threshold for potential classification as persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) and/or very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB).
PBT and vPvB classifications are based on the properties of the active substance and on the presence, over certain thresholds, of impurities classified as PBT and vPvB. While PBO itself is not a PBT nor a vPvB substance, the two potential impurities in PBO, DPM and DPE, could fulfill PBT and vPvB criteria. If confirmed to be PBT and vPvB, these two impurities when present in PBO at levels above the CLP threshold could result in the classification of the PBO and/or any biocidal products containing the PBO, as PBT or vPvB. PBO Prime is also fully compliant with the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) approval of PBO.
In 1999, Endura launched the world’s first synthetic production of PBO through an environmentally friendly and sustainable process developed to avoid Sassafras tree deforestation. PBO had been historically produced from safrole, a component of sassafras oil obtained from the tree by a destructive process that is reported as requiring about 70 kg of sassafras wood to make only 1 kg of PBO.
Now thanks to its new distillation process (patent pending), Endura has taken another step towards a more sustainable future by reducing the environmental impact of PBO thanks to achieving the minimum amounts of DPE and DPM, both of which could be classified as PBT or vPvB impurities.

The history of Endura is relatively recent, having been established in 1980, but its origins date back to the 1950s when Antonio Tozzi first cofounded Sariaf, an agro-chemical business in Faenza, Italy, then in 1958 Industria Chimica Tozzi in Idice (BO), Italy, where the first Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) was produced, and finally in 1966 Chimosa in Pontecchio Marconi (BO), Italy. From Chimosa – which was acquired by Ciba-Geigy in 1979 – Endura was born, operating in the sector of active and synergistic ingredients for insecticides.
Chimosa, in addition to antioxidants and UV stabilisers for plastics, produced Piperonyl butoxide (PBO), which is the main synergistic compound for insecticides. Subsequently, in 1979, the production of Tetramethrin (TTM), a synthetic pyrethroid, was added. Both products, PBO and TTM, are significant in the insecticide industry for pest control in household, professional and agricultural environments.
 Endura celebrates 45 years. In 1999, the Endura plant at the Chemical Hub of Ravenna, Italy was set up on a greenfield site, to produce Piperonyl butoxide (PBO), shifting from natural to synthetic production, reducing deforestation and improving capacity.
Today, Endura continues to shape the future of the pest control industry by delivering integrated, science-backed solutions that combine regulatory expertise, technical innovation, and customer-centric service on a global scale.
