Like almost all businesses, grocery retailing is really difficult to run well. Nicole Gelinas, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, points out some of the major problems a government-run grocery retailer will confront.

And the problems seem to be more than just theoretical as the experience of a Kansas City government-run retailer indicates.

And these objections are before we even ask the question: exactly what businesses does the government run that outperform the market?
