Vestibular Migraine: Episodic Dizziness or Vertigo Due to Migraines

Dizziness is a very common complaint patients have when seeing an ENT doctor. However, dizziness is not always due to an inner ear issue. In fact, it accounts for about 30% of all dizzy complaints. Neurological issues can also cause dizziness. Neurological conditions such as strokes can clearly cause vertigo, but more benign issues like vestibular migraines can also trigger vertigo along with ear-specific symptoms, adding to the complexity of correct diagnosis.

Vestibular migraines are a subtype of migraine that primarily affects balance and spatial orientation, rather than producing the typical headache. The vestibular system, which controls our sense of balance, is at the heart of this condition. People with vestibular migraines experience episodes of dizziness, vertigo, and disorientation. Unlike traditional migraines, head pain may not even be present.

Vestibular migraines can manifest in a variety of ways, and no two individuals experience them exactly the same. Common symptoms include:

- Spontaneous or movement-induced vertigo.

 - A sensation of rocking or swaying, even while sitting still.

 - Sensitivity to light, sound, or motion.

 - Visual disturbances, such as seeing patterns or flickering lights.

 - Ear fullness and/or pain
