An apparent suicidal gunman was taken into custody Monday evening in Livonia after an hours-long standoff on Middle Belt, Livonia police said.

Officers used tear gas to reach the man, who was taken to a local hospital, said Sgt. Jeff Weiss of the Livonia Police Department.

There were no injuries, police said.

Around 3:43 p.m. Monday, a woman told police that a man was sitting in a vehicle in the left turn lane south of Lyndon with a gun pointed to his head or in his mouth, Weiss said.

Police cordoned off the intersection as the Western Wayne SWAT team negotiates with the man, who Weiss said is in his 60’s.

The man’s family was made aware of the situation, Weiss said.
