Detroit tunnel reopens following response exercise

Detroit — The Detroit Windsor international commuter tunnel has reopend following an annual emergency response exercise.

The tunnel was shut down from 7-10 a.m. Sunday. Motorists were able to use the Ambassador Bridge to travel between the city and Windsor, Ontario.

The tunnel is one of North America's busiest trade crossings and stretches about a mile through the Detroit River between the United States and Canada.

Detroit's first responders have worked with their Canadian counterparts for more than 10 years on strategies and tactics to be used in the event of an emergency or terrorist incident in the tunnel.

Agencies participating in the exercise also will include Canada's Border Services, U.S. Customs & Border Protection, Homeland Security and Detroit's Fire Department and paramedics.
