Carbon emissions legislation re-emerges in IL General Assembly

Carbon emissions legislation has re-emerged in the Illinois General Assembly.

Kevin Johnson, president of the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association, says the two bills targeting trucking emissions build off a proposal that failed to advance earlier this session.

“House bill 1634. That pretty much took all semis to go to California emission standards, or what they call CARB.”  He says, “That pretty much means if you got a 2011 truck or later, there would be a phase out of those trucks.”

He tells Brownfield the impacts to farmers would be substantial.

“Pretty much all trucks would have to go to a DEF type system.”  He says, “We’re adamantly opposed. We know that that just can’t happen overnight. They think that that could be phased in over five or seven years. You know how many farmers that have trucks that are pre-emissions?”

Johnson says the bills aren’t likely to move this session but says the agriculture industry faces serious discussions on trucking emissions in the future.
