New team takes the courts in Vancouver joining the national Basketball League

The Vancouver Volcanoes joins the national wide league made of former college and pro players.

VANCOUVER, Wash. — A new basketball team in Vancouver, Washington will be joining a national league, The Basketball League. The league consists of mostly former college players, some with experience playing in Europe. Now, the Vancouver Volcanoes are making a name for themselves.

“It's just a step below the G League, so it's just an opportunity for guys who didn't make one of those teams to be seen by the right people,” said Porter Troupe assistant coach for the Vancouver Volcanoes.

Some players have local connections, Markus Golder played at Clackamas High School and Portland State University — also previously playing overseas before he made his way home.

“I'm having a great time, it's just nice to be around an amazing group of guys. Great coaching staff, a great organization that really support you and always have your back,” said Golder.

Thomas Miles is another local player on the team. He was part of the state championship team at Jefferson High School in 2017. He played at Warner Pacific University for the last two years. The Vancouver Volcanoes are giving him a chance to keep his basketball dreams alive.

“I love basketball," Miles said. "I’m always enjoying it! Anytime I get on the court to work out, I’m enjoying it.”

There are nearly 40 teams in The Basketball League spread across the country with the regular season running from March to June. Playoffs leads to a National Championship tournament — currently, the Vancouver Volcanoes are the top team in the Pacific Northwest.

This summer, the team plans to offer clinics and camps for youth basketball players.

Assistant Coach Porter Troupe says the clinics and camps are a way to connect with the Vancouver community.

“It’s just a way for the Vancouver community to feel like they have something that is theirs," said Troupe. "That they can help grow.”
