Seed dealer says most farmers are sticking to rotation plan

A farmer and seed salesman says there were no big shifts in seed orders this spring.

Ryan Ripp with Dairyland Seed tells Brownfield only a few of his customers made changes based on commodity prices. “We are seeing a little uptick in soybean sales, just a little bit of switchover, not a ton, though. I still think they’re sticking with the plan.”

Ripp says more farmers are moving to corn varieties that can handle drought and disease better. “Farmers are being prepared in case, you know, we have another dry year like last year and kind of preparing for the worst but hoping for the best. On the short corn side, it’s still early yet for that. We are seeing some farmers are touching base with some of those systems.”

Ripp says with the mild winter, many of his farmer customers were taking care of spring tillage and fertilizing much earlier than most years, and that’s allowed many farmers to start preparing their planters sooner.

Along with selling seed, Ripp farms near Dane, Wisconsin and is active with the Wisconsin Corn Promotion Board.
