Spring wheat acres top expectations

The USDA sees an increase in spring wheat acreage.

Farmers are expected to plant 11.335 million acres of non-durum spring wheat in 2024, above analysts’ expectations and 1% more than in 2023, with most of that hard red spring.

Total wheat acreage is estimated at 47.498 million acres, 4% lower, with a 7% decrease for winter wheat to 34.135 million acres.

The projection is subject to change and will likely be impacted by weather.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition reports resume Monday, April 1st at 4 Eastern/3 Central.

Comparisons for Brownfield states:

Minnesota: Spring Wheat: 1.6 million acres, 23% higher than 2023

South Dakota: Spring Wheat: 850,000 acres, 15% higher than 2023
