Sorghum acres below last year
Sorghum acreage is expected to be down this year.
The USDA estimated sorghum planted area at 6.394 million acres, 11% less than 2023, but a little bit more than what producers planted in 2022.
That year to year drop is largely due to declines in the top production states of Kansas and Texas. The USDA says that as of March 17th, Texas was 27% planted, slightly ahead of average.
The projection is subject to change and will likely be impacted by weather.
The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition reports resume Monday, April 1st at 4 Eastern/3 Central.
Comparisons for Brownfield states:
Kansas: Sorghum: 3.35 million acres, down 7% from 2023
Nebraska: Sorghum: 400,000 acres, up 18% from 2023
South Dakota: Sorghum: 365,000 acres, up 9% from 2023
