Curbing the insanity with easy DIY mosaics and Snapple®

This weekend, in order to get some well deserved “me time”, I grabbed my recycled jars, some glass pieces, some new Snapple® Straight Up™ Tea, and went to work on a new DIY Mosaic Glass project.  We are in the finalizing stages of selling the house and moving into our RV.  Life on the road is in the near future!  And I have to tell you that it has been hectic.

Well, maybe hectic is not the word.  Let’s try insane!  Between organizing an estate sale, sorting through mounds of possessions that have been accumulated over the past 30+ years, working full time and maintaining my websites, I don’t have a whole lot of time for myself.

Since I can’t even seem to remember to eat a decent meal, it was really nice to discover new Snapple® Straight Up™ Tea and Kellogg’s® Nutri-Grain® cereal bars on my latest trip to Walmart.  Both are great for snacking on the run, or  even crafting on the fly.  And when I finally make my way into my craft room, hours can go by before I resurface.  It is the ultimate “me time” for me!

So, with drink and snack in hand, I sat down and did a little crafty relaxing with recycled jars and created some fun luminaries for my RV.

Want to know how?

For this project I used:

One recycled pickle jar
Decorative Glass pieces (from the Dollar Store)
E6000 Glass Glue
Lime Green Acrylic Paint
Candle

I just love these decorative glass pieces that I found at the Dollar store.  They come in mesh bags and are located in the craft section of the store.  The green, blue, tan and white pieces of glass are very beachy looking.  Perfect for a summery outdoor candle lantern!

I used E6000 glue on this project.  Hot glue will not adhere glass to glass.  I promise.  We want something permanent here, so we went with the big dog.  Open your window for some ventilation before beginning this project.  You will have to do it in stages, because the glue takes about 30 minutes to dry.  I laid the jar on it’s side and glued pieces of glass to the top.  I then allowed it to dry, then turned the jar to work on the next section.

So, I have to admit that patience played a part with this project as it wasn’t a quick, whipped together type of craft.  However, the end results are worth it!

Glue the glass pieces on all sides, and be sure to stop before the rim of the jar.  Why?  Well, I decided to add a bit of color to the jar itself so that the cracks between the glass would not be as obvious.  Quick solution: Mix some lime green acrylic paint with water- 2 parts paint to 1 part water.  Pour into the jar.  Put the lid on the jar and shake well.  Pour out the extra and allow it to dry.

Then glue on the remaining pieces of glass around the rim of the jar.

I loved the finished look of my pretty candle holder!  You would never know it used to be a pickle jar in a former life.  I think it moved up in the world!

Throw a candle in there and light it up.  Just beautiful!  Perfect for our new RV life!
