Small plane crashes in Michigan, 4 aboard hurt

Berrien Springs — Authorities are investigating a small plane crash in Berrien County in the southwest corner of Michigan.

The Federal Aviation Administration says four people were aboard a single-engine Piper PA-24 Comanche that crashed about 11:15 a.m. Friday in Berrien Springs, less than two miles from the Andrews University Airpark.

Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Police Chief Rick Smiedendorf says two people were seriously injured and two others sustained minor injuries.

The two couples on the plane were traveling from the Richmond Municipal Airport in east-central Indiana to a family gathering in Michigan. The plane crashed in a neighborhood, and some houses lost power.

Smiedendorf says passengers reported engine failure. An officer at the scene found three passengers outside the plane, two of them walking around. The pilot had to be extricated.
