Lions GM Mayhew: No trades expected by deadline

Bagshot, England — Lions general manager Martin Mayhew addressed the media Thursday for the first time since the first day of training camp in July.

Mayhew declined to discuss many of the desired topics, including the future of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, but with the NFL's trade deadline coming Tuesday, he said he doesn't expect to make any deals.

"You kind of talk to everybody around the league, get calls from different teams, things like that, but I don't anticipate us making any moves at the trade deadline," he said over lunch at the Pennyhill Park Hotel southwest of London.

Asked specifically if Suh is on the market, Mayhew said, "I don't have any plan to trade anybody. I'll leave it at that."

Mayhew has completed two trades at the deadline since taking over as general manager in 2008. In his first year, he traded wide receiver Roy Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for picks in the first, third and sixth rounds of the 2009 draft. In 2012, the Lions traded a 2014 fifth-round pick for wide receiver Mike Thomas.

The NFL voided a deal in 2011 in which the Lions tried to swap running back Jerome Harrison and a draft pick for then-Philadelphia Eagles running back Ronnie Brown because Harrison failed his physical due to a brain tumor.

Although things could change between now and Tuesday, the Lions like the makeup of their roster. The team is 5-2 despite All Pro wide receiver Calvin Johnson missing the past two games. Tight ends Eric Ebron and Joseph Fauria, linebacker Kyle Van Noy and wide receiver TJ Jones are among the players who could provide a lift the rest of the season, too, though three of them are rookies.
