Good stuff: Pumpkin Fest, spiced latte, baking tip

One good event

For the Pumpkin Bake-Off, prepare enough tastes of your pumpkin baked good for five or six judges. Arrive with your baked good by 2 p.m., judging will begin at 3 p.m. Call (313) 402-5563, email detroitfarmandgarden@gmail.com or visit the store at 1759 21st, between Bagley and Vernor, to enter.

One good tip

We’re plunging headlong into the baking season, and now’s a great time to stock up on supplies so you’re ready to go when the mood strikes. Also be sure to restock the baking powder and baking soda as they start to lose potency after six months.

One good drink

Spending a fortune on those pumpkin spiced lattes? Make your own at home with this recipe from the Food Network:

Combine 3 to 4 tablespoons sugar, 2 ½ tablespoons pumpkin puree, 1 tablespoon vanilla and a heaping ¼ teaspoon each of cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg in a small saucepan. Whisk in 2 ¼ cups milk and ¼ cup espresso (or strong brewed coffee), and bring to a simmer over medium high heat. Pour into 2 mugs and top each with whipped cream and more nutmeg.
