EAST LANSING – At the beginning of their freshman year of high school, Morgan McGregor turned to Emma Flynn and said bluntly, "Do you want to be my best friend?"

The pair were inseparable from then on, ending up together at Michigan State University.

McGregor, 20, was found dead Saturday of what East Lansing police said "appears to be a natural death." McGregor had a heart condition that required her to use a pacemaker, but Flynn said today it isn't clear yet how she died.

Lt. Scott Wriggelsworth of the East Lansing Police Department said today a cause of death hadn't been determined. He said an autopsy had been completed but results of toxicology and other tests wouldn't be available for six to 10 weeks.

He said nothing from the investigation indicated foul play and there was no initial indication drugs or alcohol were involved.

Now, Flynn, 21, is spending time sifting through old photos and letters and remembering a friend she called "the most beautiful person I knew on the inside and out."

"She was extremely genuine, and she had a very gentle kindness about her that just kind of shone off her," Flynn said today, speaking via phone from the pair's home town of White Lake. "She was just amazing. And funny. Just perfect."

Flynn said McGregor has had a heart condition at least since their time together at Lakeland High School, but she wasn't sure how much McGregor's family wanted to talk about it. The family is asking for contributions in McGregor's name to the Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation, Cardiology Unit, 3901 Beaubien, Detroit, 48201.

McGregor's major was accounting, while Flynn studied education. McGregor joined a sorority, while Flynn did not.

But still the two remained close.

Today, Flynn read aloud from a note McGregor had once sent her. It listed all of McGregor's favorite things: Shoes, chocolate, her cell phone, gymnastics, other things — "and in all bold letters, Emma Flynn," Flynn said.

"She just touched a lot of lives in her short time here," she said. "And it still just doesn't seem real."
