MSU remembers student who died over weekend

EAST LANSING – As she closed out her junior year at Michigan State University, Morgan McGregor could see her life coming together.

"I can finally say with confidence that these past three years of hard work have paid off because today I was accepted into the accounting program at Michigan State!" she wrote on her Facebook page in May. "I have never felt more accomplished, and I am so eager to see where this journey takes me!"

But the journey would end too early.

McGregor died on Saturday afternoon. East Lansing police found her unresponsive in the 300 block of Grove Street. Police are continuing to investigate, but said that her death "appears to be a natural death."

She was 20.

On Sunday, her Pi Beta Phi sorority sisters repainted the Rock on MSU's campus in blue and pink in her honor.

"Heaven gained an angel," it said, "rest in peace Morgan"

McGregor apparently had a heart condition. She posted an ultrasound photo and pictures of herself in what appears to be a hospital bed on Twitter a year ago with the caption "Got pictures taken of my heart today #BatteryOperated #Pacemaker."

She posted a screenshot of that same tweet in August with the words, "One year ago today! #happy and #healthy".

McGregor "was our sister, a leader and our friend," MSU chapter President Rebecca Ruhlman said in a statement. "Our hearts are broken and we send our deepest condolences to Morgan's family. We are very appreciative of everyone's thoughts and prayers, but ask for privacy as we work through this very difficult time, together as a chapter."

Pi Beta Phi's national office said the MSU chapter met shortly after McGregor's death to share the news with fellow sorority sisters. Counseling services have been offered to the local chapter.
