Iowa Ag Secretary optimistic after good start to crop year

Iowa’s Ag Secretary is optimistic about this year’s crop based on a successful planting season.

Mike Naig tells Brownfield corn and soybean planting was significantly faster than normal.

“That’s not uniform of course, there were parts of the state that were slowed down because of some wet conditions. But as we turn the page to June, I feel really good about where we are. Of course now we shift our thinking to how are we going to do on rainfall.”

He says the latest Drought Monitor indicates worsening conditions.

“A really broad decline across the state (with) a significant percent of the state now is either D-0 to D-3 drought. We saw an expansion of some of that drought in western Iowa and southeastern Iowa in particular.”

Naig says the last couple of years has proven crops can be behind on moisture and so long as there are timely rains, yields will be good.
