SD corn conditions start the season good

South Dakota farmers had good planting progress and a decent corn condition rating for the first update this season.

Corn planting in South Dakota is 92%, well ahead of average for this time of the year, with 63% of the crop emerging. Conditions are rated 65% good to excellent.

Soybean planting is at 81% complete with 36% of the crop emerging, both ahead of last year.

Winter wheat conditions declined in South Dakota in the last week. USDA says the crop is rated 51% fair with 10% of the crop headed. Spring wheat conditions are rated 49% fair with 88% of the crop emerging.

South Dakota’s sorghum planting is 55% complete, well ahead of average and sunflower planting is 28% complete, behind the average pace for this time of the year.

Pasture and rangeland are rated 45% fair in South Dakota, a decline from the previous week.
