Patches is '40 pounds of love': See the massive cat adopted in Virginia this week

A Virginia cat that weighs a whopping 40 pounds found his fur-ever home this week.

Richmond Animal Care and Control posted about the gray and white kitty Wednesday in an attempt to coax cat lovers to consider making him theirs.

"Did you wake up today and say, 'let’s adopt the largest cat anyone has ever seen?'" the shelter wrote in a Facebook post. "If so, we have the cat for you."

Patches the cat, who weighs 40.3 pounds, was adopted at the Richmond Animal Care and Control, the shelter posted on April 19, 2023.

Patches the cat weighs 40.3 pounds and is on a "very special" diet and exercise plan, the shelter wrote.

He's also a pretty sweet kitty, the shelter said.

The shelter asked interested parties to send them an email with their home information and commit to helping Patches "get to a safe and (healthy) weight."

"Until then, we will marvel at his gloriously gluttonous body," the shelter said.

Just before 4 p.m. Wednesday, the shelter posted a video saying the cat had been adopted and was "leaving the building."

The video shows two workers carrying him out in a kennel.

"40 lbs of LOVE right there," the shelter wrote.

Christie Chipps Peters, director of Richmond Animal Care & Control, told USA TODAY on Thursday morning that Patches is doing well in his new home.

"We are so happy to have found him a committed companion who will help him get to a healthy weight," Peters wrote in an email.

Social media users wished him well in the comments. Some even asked about his health.

"Tell me he can get in and out of the litter box without getting stuck," one Facebook user wrote.

The shelter said the kitty has "perfect" bloodwork.
