April birthstone

The diamond is the birthstone for April.

While this gemstone is well-known for its colorless or white variety, there are colored diamonds, such as the famous Hope diamond. Diamonds can also come in black, blue, green, pink, red, purple, orange or yellow.

Diamonds are a very strong gem. Its name derives from the Greek word "adamas" which means "invincible" or "unbreakable," so its durable quality is fitting.

The birthstone can be found across the globe. Diamond trading began as early as the fourth century BCE, according to the Geological Institute of America. Diamonds were initially collected from streams and rivers in India. The gems were sought out by royalty and the wealthy.

The gem then found its way to Europe. By the 1400s, the stone further cemented itself as a symbol of elite status. The Hope diamond was mined in India and later was sold to King Louis XIV of France in 1668.

The diamond is also seen as a symbol of clarity and strength. It's said to ward off the evil eye, according to an anonymous second-century BCE poet. Diamonds are believed to represent and bring longevity, strength, beauty and happiness.

Besides being the birthstone for April, diamonds signify 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries.
