EAST LANSING — The Islamic Society of Greater Lansing is raising money to cover funeral and burial costs for a man who was struck by a vehicle and killed Sunday night near the Interstate 496/U.S. 127 interchange.

Elham Abdi, 23, moved to the Lansing area from Afghanistan last year and has no family in the U.S., the Islamic Society said on the Give Lively crowdfunding platform. The campaign had raised nearly $11,000 on Wednesday.

"We as a family need to take (care) of his final rites," the message said. "Janaza (funeral) arrangements are pending consent from the parents of the deceased to bury him here locally."

Abdi was walking along I-496 near the Trowbridge Road exit when he was struck and killed, the Islamic Society said.

East Lansing police have said a man was struck and killed about 11:15 p.m. while walking along the highway. On Wednesday, Captain Chad Pride said the incident remained under investigation and declined further comment.
