Kansas farmer gets started on corn planting
Corn planters were rolling Wednesday for a southeast Kansas farmer.
Zach Townsend raises corn, soybeans, and wheat near the Kansas/Oklahoma border.
“April 1st is usually a pretty good start date for a lot of guys, so we are a few days ahead of schedule,” he said. “The fields are working nice, and the ground is laying down really good. It’s going to make a really nice seed bed.”
He tells Brownfield he’s concerned about a lack of moisture coming off last year’s severe drought conditions.
“Right now, everyone is kind of on pins and needles,” Townsend said. “I’d say we’re expecting another drought. Morale is still good, but it’s really fresh in our minds still.”
Townsend says he’s expecting to plant his first crop soybeans around the first week of June.
