HPAI reported in Lapeer County

Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed on a Michigan hunting preserve.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirms an upland game bird flock in Lapeer County tested positive for the virus, the second domestic case reported this year and fifth case for the county.

State Veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland says the department has had an increase in calls in the past two weeks about sick domestic birds and it is crucial for every bird owner to prevent transmission of the virus from migratory birds.

The 1,100-bird flock had to be depopulated and the premises is under quarantine to prevent further spread of the disease.
