United States Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) on Tuesday demanded the arrest of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg if he files criminal charges against former President Donald Trump for paying hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

"A Trump indictment would be a disgusting abuse of power," Paul tweeted. "The DA should be put in jail."

What followed was an entire afternoon of swift mockery and forceful rebuttals on social media.

"This is what happens in dictatorships. Prosecutors who hold the powerful accountable end up in jail," wrote ex-White House ethics lawyer Richard Painter.

Republicans against Trumpism: "Translation: Donald Trump is above the law."

Luke Zaleski: Thanks Rand, for threatening Americans, continuing to hold us hostage after letting Trump get away with treason, after letting Trump get away with obstruction, after letting Trump get away with abuse of power, after letting Russia get away with interfering in our elections but no."

Benjamin Simeon: "Someone should be out in jail for holding Trump to the same standard Michael Cohen was? No one is above the law."

John Sipher: "So awful. You don’t deserve your high office."

Gerald A. Griggs: "The DA is responsible for upholding the law and ensuring that justice is served. If he is doing his job, why are you calling for a member of the judiciary to be jailed? The role of a District Attorney is to uphold the law, protect the community, and seek justice for victims of crime. Wouldn't those duties require him to investigate and prosecute crimes?"

Jimmy: "Can't believe that fascist wants to do fascist things."

Brian Guest: "Your haircut should be put in jail."

Reid Spencer: "That's an absurd statement, bordering on obstruction of justice. Let the law take its course based on the evidence."

Alfred Spellman: "Go dump your trash on your neighbor’s lawn again."

bob clendenin: "You're a pathetic stain on our democracy."

Dennis Perkins: "F*ck yourself, traitorous merm."
