Food and ag economy surpassing pre-pandemic levels

The latest Feeding the Economy report finds the economic output of the food and ag industries increased in every state during 2022.

Senior Director of Public Policy RJ Karney with the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture tells Brownfield the growth comes despite disruptions from the pandemic, war in Ukraine, and supply chain issues.

“The agriculture sector, including related activities, contributed more than $8.6 trillion to the national economy, this is a 22 percent increase since the 2019 report,” he explains.

Karney says the analysis provides insights down to the congressional level about the impact of food and ag industries.

“It really shows and highlights the innovation within the ag and food sectors that really stems from the grassroots, the farmers and ranchers who are growing, producing, and raising the food, fiber, and energy that we all utilize,” he says.

The sector makes up nearly one-fifth of the national economic output, with the manufacturing of ag products also accounting for nearly a fifth of all manufacturing jobs.

More than 25 national food and ag groups commissioned the report which is in its seventh year and released to coincide with National Ag Day.
