Stormy weather returning to the Pacific West; an active pattern continues across the Heartland

A Pacific storm system moving ashore in California later today will dominate the nation’s weather headlines during the next few days.  Initially, storm impacts will be focused across central and southern California and the Southwest, with many areas receiving heavy rain, mountain snow, and potentially damaging winds.

By mid-week, the high-wind threat will shift to southern sections of the Rockies and High Plains, where gusts of 60 to 70 mph or higher could result in reduced visibility in blowing dust.  Meanwhile, a separate disturbance will produce mid-week snow in the north-central U.S.

Late in the week, heavy rain (locally 2 to 5 inches or more) may induce flash flooding from the mid-South into the Ohio Valley.  In contrast, little or no rain will fall during the next 5 days across the southern High Plains and along the southern Atlantic Coast.
