NPPC garnering congressional support for Beagle Brigade Act

The National Pork Producers Council is working to generate congressional support for the Beagle Brigade Act.

NPPC’s Andrew Bailey says the bill recently reintroduced in the U.S. House would permanently authorize USDA’s National Detector Dog Training Center.

“We’re still pushing to show that there’s broad support, not just throughout the ag industry but across simply all sectors of the economy. Fifty to sixty groups are listed in a Dear Colleague letter to members of Congress asking for support.”

A companion bill has also been introduced in the Senate.

Bailey tells Brownfield the Beagle Brigade remains the first line of defense for early detection of foreign animal diseases like African swine fever.

“It’s just amazing how effective these animals are.”

Bailey suggests there are several ways the legislation could pass this year and says one potential avenue is the farm bill.
