Three people suffered mild to moderate injuries Friday morning when a piece of equipment failed at a distillery in Fairview Township, said Brandon Freistat, emergency management coordintor for the municipality.

The patients were taken to area hospitals for treatment, said Ted Czech, public information officer for the York County Office of Emergency Management/York County 911.

Emergency responders, including the York County Hazmat Team, rushed to Crostwater Distillery in the 500 block of Industrial Drive. It had been reported as an explosion or structure fire, but there was no fire.

York County 911 received the first call around 10:16 a.m., Czech said.

Why the equipment failed remains under investigation, Freistat said.

The material in the equipment involved 75 percent vinegar. The hazmat team as well as an environmental team hired by the business are dealing with the cleanup.

There was no threat to the public, Freistat said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident, according to a spokesperson.
