Brittney Griner signs new contract with Phoenix Mercury: report
Women's National Basketball Association center Brittney Griner has signed a new contract with the Phoenix Mercury two months after she returned to the United States from Russia, where she was serving a nine-year prison sentence for possession of vape cartridges that contained cannabis oil.
"Griner, a 32-year-old free agent, signed a one-year, $165,100 contract with the Mercury on Saturday, a source confirmed to ESPN. She'll return to the team that drafted her first overall in 2013 for a 10th season," ESPN confirmed over the weekend, based on reporting from Her Hoop Stats.
The outlet noted that when Griner last played, she "had one of the best years of her career in 2021, averaging 20.5 points, 1.9 blocks, 2.7 assists, and career-highs with 9.5 rebounds per game, 2.4 offensive rebounds and a .846 free throw percentage."
Some sports fans, however, have expressed disappointment and frustration with Griner's new salary, which Her Hoop Stats' Richard Cohen explained was "precisely calculated to leave Phoenix just enough for two vet minimums and two base minimums in their final four standard roster spots."
