Clean fuels growth fueling soybean crushing expansion

An expansion of soybean crush capacity is currently underway in the United States.

Demand for clean fuels like biodiesel and renewable diesel is helping drive the rapid expansion. Steve Censky is the CEO of the American Soybean Association.

“We’ve seen over 24 major expansions or brand-new crush plants that have been announced or are underway,” he says.

If all the planned new or expanded crush plants come online, he tells Brownfield, “we’re going to see an expansion in 3-5 years of crush capacity in the United States by about one third. That’s great news for jobs, that’s great news for value-added, and that’s great news for improving the basis for soybean farmers.”

Nebraska Farmer Greg Anderson is a governing board member for Clean Fuels Alliance America.

“Over the last 10 years domestic crush was strong and yet now it’s even stronger,” he says. “With that, an increase of more than 700 million bushels per year in crush capacity when these plants are online and that’s going to be in the next couple of years.”

Brownfield interviewed Censky and Anderson during the 2023 Clean Fuels Conference.
